When He Smiles Ch. 2

Ray's palms. He wasn't sure what to make of the trio before him, but then again, it had never been this easy for him to make

Ray had since learned the two boys before him were

one as well as the older of the two. Mikey was the taller one, blonde
and bespectacled. Ray couldn't help but be unnerved by him a little, as he
had not once changed his blank expression since they invited themselves into Ray's house. Then there was the girl,
either of the boys. Loose black curls tumbled down her back, and there was a carefree smile reaching up to
her light brown eyes.
``That sound good?'' said Gerard. Ray looked up
``The arcade,'' he said. ``Maria and I were thinking of heading over. You in? Or is that
not your thing?''
Ray looked over at Maria. She sat cross-legged, elbow on her knee and
chin propped up on a fist. She was looking back at him expectantly. Her eyes seemed to laugh.
``Yeah, I'm down for that,'' Ray said.
He helped Maria to her feet, and Ray and his emotionless brother followed. As they headed down the street, Maria hopped onto
Gerard's back and thrust her fist into the air.
``FREEEEDOM!'' she yelled. The movers and
Ray's mother looked up. Ray and his mother
shared a look, not sure what to think at first, but then she smiled.
``Looks like you made some new
friends,'' she called with a wave. Ray
Along the way, Ray found himself on an unofficial tour of the group's stomping grounds. Gerard and Maria pointed out various places they
frequented, though they assured him that there was more than what he
was seeing today, and that he'd see much
more later on if he wanted.
``This place has the best pizza. Maria
doesn't think so, but that's just cuz she doesn't know her pizza,'' said Gerard, earning a smack upside the head from Maria. ``And up here, we skip in this park sometimes.''
``But don't tell our parents,'' Maria said with
a conspiratorial smile.
``Dead men tell no tales,'' Mikey chimed in, looking Ray in the eyes. Ray let out an
involuntary shudder. ``I'm kidding.''

Ray nodded as Gerard spoke. It was a lot to take in, and when Gerard noticed, he assured Ray that he'd have plenty of time to get used to this area.
``If you hang with us enough, this part of
the neighborhood will become a second home to you, trust us,'' Maria said.
``It's like the rest of New Jersey doesn't exist to them,''
``We do know there's a rest of Jersey,'' Maria shot back. ``Why do you think we avoid the shore?''
For the first time since they met, Ray allowed himself a laugh.
``Here it is!'' Gerard declared. Maria slid off his back, and the two of them
gestured dramatically to a square, yellow building with a sign that

``Casa Avalon Arcade!''
INSIDE, THE LIGHTS WERE dimmed down, but the blinking lights of the games more than made up for the lack of
overhead lighting. After paying admission, Gerard and Maria
immediately ran off down the corridor and to the right, into a room where some of the more serious arcade games were held. Ray was taken aback when he entered, as a
large movie-sized TV screen at the far end of the room was playing an
episode of Dexter's Laboratory. In front
of the screen, people sat at tables eating pizza. Not too far away, a young couple were playing air hockey. Though the guy was winning, his
girlfriend insisted she was ahead, claiming that air hockey's point system was the same as golf's.
Mikey took his bag of nickels to a game of Ski Ball, and Gerard had
challenged Maria to a game of House of the Dead. Ray wasn't sure where to start. There was too much to
FUUUUUU!'' Maria shouted, throwing down her gun. Gerard grinned and held
his up, pretending to blow away a puff of smoke.
``Yeah, I got a problem, you fucking kill
stealer!'' Maria glared at Gerard; then, from the corner of her eye, she saw Ray approaching. ``Did you see that,
``I…didn't see anything,'' Ray admitted.
``Well, don't play House of the Dead with Gerard. He's a filthy cheating whore!''
``What?! Since when is protecting my
dearest partner in crime from oncoming zombie monkeys
cheating?'' he asked, almost too sweetly. Maria wriggled in Gerard's arms as he brought her close and gave her a
kiss on top of the head. ``I couldn't bear to
lose you to abominations in the eyes of God.''
``Yeah, well, I was going to kill those damn monkeys and you know it,'' she
``Fuck this shit. I'm out.''
Gerard grinned, watching Maria stalk away. Ray just raised his
