...Of Juliet and Her
Zack held the small gift in the palm of his hand, shifting his grasp to wipe the sweat away. He
didn't want to gross Alex out with his clammy hands. The young girl was moving that day, all the way
to the other side of the country. For a kid Zack's age, `across the country' meant almost a million
miles away. She swore she would write him letters because she was certain her parents wouldn't let
her call long distance.
He felt sick to his stomach as he watched her carry one of the many moving boxes to the U-Haul
her parents were packing. Her parents were taking his friend away. Alex wasn't just some girl. She
was his best friend, and he would probably never see her again.
Not even knowing how to love, he knew that Alex meant something special to him. She
was his best friend. His forever friend.
Her blue-green eyes met Zacky's green ones, and she ran down the sidewalk to where
Zack was standing.
She nodded, wiping her tears away. He pulled her into a warm embrace, breathing gently on her
“I got you this… It was my grandma's.” He swallowed hard around the lump in
his throat before holding his hand out, dropping the silver and turquoise ring into her awaiting
She gasped, trying to give it back to him. He refused, shaking his head.
“I already asked my Mom, she said it was okay.”
Alex frowned, putting the ring on the same finger her mom wore her wedding ring. It slipped from
its spot against her knuckled, and she sighed in defeat.
“I hope you know, just because I wear this doesn't make me your girlfriend. You still have
cooties!” She replied, making Zack chuckle.
“I'm going to miss you Alex,” he said, grasping her small hand in his. He squeezed
her hand, and she gave him a faint smile. She stepped closer to him, pecking his cheek.
“You'll always be my friend Zee.”
“I know,” he whispered, nodding in agreement.
“Alex!” Her Dad yelled at her from the front porch of her old home,
“It's almost time to go!”
Zack's shoulders slumped as he dropped his hold on her hand.
“Bye Zacky,” she turned on her heel, sprinting in the same direction she had come
from. Breaking Zack's heart.
Alex breathed a sigh of relief when she opened her eyes, her face resting against Zack's chest. She
turned her head, pressing her ear to the cotton of his black t-shirt, the sound of his heart beating
softly making her smile. Zack had showed up earlier that night when she had called and told him she
wanted to see him. Since she began to be with him, her parents had forced her to abandon
extracurricular activities and seeing her boyfriend to focusing all her spare time on academics.
The change was really drastic, even more so since she would be without Zack. When her parents first
met her future love, the two of them were only ten. Her mom thought Zack was adorable with his goofy
smile and chubby cheeks. Now as her parents looked at her boyfriend, the boy they once adored, they
only saw a mischievous ruffian with tattoos and piercings who had nasty habits and was rumored to be
in a gang. They wouldn't see Zack the way Alex did; a caring, sweet, passionate guy with a big heart
who said he loved her no matter what.
In her eyes, Zack was perfect. He was everything she could want in a guy, and so much more. He
didn't care that her parents hated him and treated him like dirt. He wanted to be with her, even if
he was a Montague in their Capulet eyes.
They rekindled their young love when Zack's English teacher referred him to a tutor
as he struggled with the works of Shakespeare. The paper his teacher had given him
read that his tutor's first name was Alex, and as he shrugged into the library he
expected to be waved to a wooden table by some nerdy boy sat with black plastic
glasses and a severe overbite. He was pleasantly surprised when a petite, dirty-blonde girl with
blue-green eyes greeted him and asked if he was Zack. He was dumbfounded
by her smile, instantly filled with the familiarity of the best friend who had moved
away nearly eight years ago.
He had recognized her right off the bat, but the idea that it was really her was reinforced when
he spied the small silver and turquoise ring hanging on a chain around her neck. On a whim, coming
from some thought in his mind he couldn't quite place, he dropped his backpack. Stepping closer to
her, his fingertips traced the contours of her chin before he grinned, wrapping his
arms around her waist.
When he pulled away from the hug, he noticed the tears in her eyes.
“Don't cry Alex, I'm here…” He assured her, holding her face in his hands.
“Fuck,” she swore, immediately clasping her hand over her mouth.
They both laughed before Alex began to say what she had wanted to.
“You remember me… And you're real. And I'm not
crying,” She grumbled.
“How could I forget you? Oh, and you never wrote me,” Zack crossed his arms
over his chest, faking a look of sorrow.
She shrugged, “I got busy. But now, I'm back for good. We don't have to start over, let's
just pick up where we left off.”
“Zack?” she whispered, lacing her fingers with his before squeezing his hand, drawing
him from his thoughts.
“Hmm…” he mumbled, Alex climbing to the other side of the bed when he began to
sit up against her headboard.
“How long are we going to keep this up?” Alex questioned, her voice small as she focused
her attention to anywhere but Zack's gaze.
“As long as it takes to make your parents realize that when I say that I love you, I mean that
it's forever,” he stated plainly, his fingers stroking her cheek.
She blushed a slight pink before settling into his arms again, nestling her face in the crook of his
“Alex Marie, you're all I ever want. I don't care what lengths I have to go to be yours, even
if it means `only seeing you at school' and climbing in your window in the middle of the
night,” he told her, kissing her forehead and cuddling her closer.
“And I want to be with you Zack, as long as you love me,” she murmured, relaxing for
once and not really caring if her parents caught the two of them. She had him, something she always
wanted to have.
For Miss Alex, who has waited patiently! I hope you like this! You truly are phenomenal! :D
