Just The Way You
Gabby sighed as she rested against the large wooden door to the inside of the mansion, straightening
her dress as she slipped her feet into her high heels. After nearly a three-hour stint in traffic,
she was just happy that she had made it to her best friend's wedding on time and sat through the
ceremony without nodding off.
As she walked down the hall, her phone began ringing in her purse. Glancing at the caller-ID, she
shook her head at the sight of her boyfriend's name. She silenced the ringer, turning her phone off
Pushing the ivory door open, she poked her head inside and greeted her teary-eyed best friend.
Melissa tried her best to give her a hug, her poufy dress making it difficult.
“Look at the blushing bride…”
Melissa began fanning herself as she took deep breaths, smiling widely at Gabby.
“I'm so glad you came!” Melissa mused, wiping away a stray tear.
“Don't cry, you'll ruin your make-up. And you know for a fact I wouldn't miss this for the
She grinned at her, squeezing Melissa's hands in her own.
“Your wedding was beautiful… Are you still going to dance your first dance to
`Keeper of the Stars'?”
Melissa shook her head, “No, we changed it to `I Swear'… you know
how much that song has meant to Greg and I...”
“I think that's cute. It means a lot to the both of you.”
“Did Brian come with you?”
Gabby frowned at the sound of her boyfriend's name, “No, he chose to stay home because he
can't stand how emotional I get at weddings…”
“He's still a total douche about them? Does he realize with that attitude he could lose a good
thing?” Melissa asked, dropping her grasp and moving to the chair in front of the vanity.
“I doubt it. He's been pretty self-absorbed lately… with the new album and all.”
Melissa rolled her eyes, placing a towel over her lap as she leaned over the counter to reapply her
“I'm going to go down to the bar. I'll try to get a good spot so I can see your first
dance…” Her voice trailed off as she began to walk out of the room.
“Gabs, you know you've been my best friend forever…. I just want to see you happy. And
there's also a reserved seat at my parent's table for you,” Melissa told her before returning
to fix her make-up.
Gabby murmured a `thank you' before exiting the room, sighing at the thought of her grumpy
boyfriend. She had asked him over and over again to attend her best friend's wedding with her, and
he refused every time. He claimed he didn't want to go because he didn't like to see Gabby cry,
especially when he could help it.
Following a crowd of other attendees, she pushed past people to get to the open bar. Catching the
attention of the bartender, she ordered a vodka bay breeze, telling the man behind the counter to
pour a little more vodka than the pineapple and cranberry juice.
She picked up her drink, holding it carefully to not spill it on her dress as she weaved through the
people standing around to find Melissa's parents. Spying Melissa's mother waving her over, she made
her way to the table, setting her drink down before taking her seat.
“Gabby, darling! Glad you made it; Melissa looks so beautiful, didn't she?” She
questioned her, reaching over to pat her hand.
“Where's that fiance of yours? Wasn't he your plus one?”
“Well, my boyfriend,” she stressed, “is at the studio recording.”
“He still hasn't proposed yet!? What is wrong with him?”
Gabby shrugged, figuring she would wait to respond as she heard the feedback from the sound system.
“Welcome everybody,” the minister stood on the stage, “I would like to direct your
attention to the back of the room, to reintroduce Mr. and Mrs. Greg Robinson.”
All eyes were directed to the entrance, those seated standing on their feet to welcome the couple.
Melissa and Greg emerged from the hallway, sharing a kiss before continuing on their way to the
front of the hall, sitting down at the head table.
The night continued to go as planned, heartfelt words spoken and tears shed. Gabby tried her best to
keep herself composed, surprising herself when she didn't even tear up. Although she hated how he
could be when it came to her and weddings, she really wanted Brian there with her to enjoy the
Greg's brother stood next to the microphone, gripping his beer tightly in one hand as he read off an
index card, soon afterwards announcing it was time for the couple's first dance.
The opening bars of the couple's wedding song began to play, Gabby grinning as she watched Greg take
Melissa's hand and lead her to the dance floor. Her heart swelled with happiness as she observed the
way the two of them looked at each other, their foreheads pressed together as they spoke, their
sweet nothings inaudible to the rest of the crowd.
Nearly fifteen minutes passed before others began to pair up and dance, Gabby shifting uncomfortably
in her chair as she uneasily watched more people take to the floor and sway with the music.
She began to head back to the bar, reaching it in record time and asking for a shot. Downing the
liquor, she propped against the counter with her cheek resting on her fist. She beamed when she
heard the song change, a light orchestra beginning to remind her of her boyfriend. The crowd parted
as someone made their way through, and Gabby gasped when someone put their hands on her waist,
turning her in her place.
Her own brown eyes met Brian's deep chocolate irises, her heart melting as she forgot all about her
current frustration toward him as he took her hand, lacing their fingers together as he lead her to
the dance floor.
“Someday, when I'm awfully low, when the world is cold, I will feel a glow just thinking of
you… and the way you look tonight…” he sang along softly as he placed his free
hand on her hip, pulling her close and attempting to do the simple steps of a waltz.
She giggled, rolling her eyes as she pushed him away. He feigned a look of shock before she wrapped
her arms around his neck, stepping closer to him and resting her head against his chest as they
began to dance as if they were in high school again.
“You're lovely, with your smile so warm,” he whispered, his lips against her ear as he
kept repeating the words that belonged to the song playing through the speakers; the song they had
called theirs for so long.
“And your cheeks so soft… there is nothing for me but to love you, and the way you look
“When did you get here?” She inquired, moving her head to catch his gaze.
“About thirty minutes ago. It was hell requesting this song, but you were worth it,” He
grinned, kissing Gabby's forehead, “I'm sorry.”
She shook her head, “You have nothing to be sorry for.”
“No, I was being a jerk. What if some guy had come on to you while you were here?”
Laughing, Gabby pressed her lips to Brian's, nipping at his bottom lip and holding onto one side of
his unbuttoned suit jacket.
“With each word, your tenderness grows, tearing my fears apart,” he continued, bringing
their hands up so he could kiss her wrist, “With each laugh that wrinkles your noise, touches
my foolish heart….”
He pecked her lips again, singing right along with the remake of the Sinatra song, never missing a
lyric as he mimicked Michael Buble.
“Lovely….never, ever change. Keep that breathless charm…”
Gabby began to say something, Brian softly pushing his finger to her lips as he finished the song.
“Won't you please arrange it? `Cause I love you… just the way you look tonight.”
She shifted her hand, settling it on the back of his neck as she threaded her fingers in the hair at
the nape of his neck, their lips meeting over and over again well after the music stopped.
“I love you Brian. Even if you make me want to scream sometimes…”
Smirking, he kissed her hard, tightening his arms around her.
“I love you too Gabby, more than you can imagine. And I know I'm not the best guy, but you've
got my heart…How about we get out of here?”
She nodded, breaking from their embrace.
“I think we should start planning a wedding of our own,” he winked, kissing her one more
time before snatching up her bag as they rushed away from her best friend's wedding.
Another completed one-shot for Gabby (pen_and_ink)! So, read and review, let me know what you think.
Personally, I thought towards the end of this it got weak.. I hope you still like it, Gabs! Thanks
for being there when I need to rant about stupid things (and people!) Phenomenalalex, your one-shot
is next on my list of fiction to write! No joke! It will be done soon!
Song used was “The Way You Look Tonight” by Michael Buble. Originally by Frank Sinatra,
of course. Both amazing!
