Black And Gold
By pen_and_ink

Please forgive me for the drabble that is this story, I love this song and tried so hard to get something out of it. It's certainly not my best but it is the fluffy stuff I tend to let my one-shot's wander off to. Regardless, I hope you enjoy it and please review, you know I love the chirp of the blackberry!

Black and Gold

“I wanna be next to you…”

If the fish swam out of the ocean
and grew legs and they started walking
and the apes climbed down from the trees
and grew tall and they started talking

I had always told him that no matter what paths our lives took us on separately, that I would always find my way back to him. For a while I didn't think it would be at all possible to see him again the way we had seen each other when we were in high school. It seemed impossible, like fish walking clear out of the ocean. Little did I know that the wedding of two of our best friends would set in motion one of the biggest moments of my life.

When I opened the invitation with a return address of Dibenedetto/Sanders I smiled instantly; I always knew Matt and Val would end up married one day, they had practically been together since the womb. The beautifully worded black and gold invitation slid from the envelope and I knew in that instant that everything I had avoided when I began work was coming full circle and I would have to face the one person who I had never once forgiven myself for leaving behind. I would have to see Brian.

and the stars fell out of the sky
and my tears rolled into the ocean
now
I'm looking for a reason why
you even set my world into motion

I had to stop myself from letting any tears fall when I first saw him at the ceremony. He was standing next to Matt at the outdoor altar wearing his tuxedo; he wore it well and he knew it. He always had been a little on the smug side when we were younger. I watched him for a few moments as his eyes scanned the people sitting in the congregation waiting for the ceremony to start. When his eyes stopped moving my heart nearly jumped out of my chest as they landed on me I was dumbstruck because here he was, a man I had known since I was 13 years old, and him looking at me was making me act like a complete zombie. He smiled at me coyly, and sent a wink in my direction. I felt the heat rise up in my cheeks as I smiled back and gave him a small wave. After all these years he still had the well to do to know how to make me feel weak in the knees. After all, he was Brian Haner.

'cause if you're not really here
then
the stars don't even matter
now I
'm filled to the top with fear
that it's all just a bunch of matter

The reception was one for the books. Only Matt and Val could have an affair of that magnitude and get away with it the way they did. An outdoor wedding that continued onto the early hours of the morning.

I was elbow deep in cocktails, losing count after the first five, and just continuing to watch everyone mingle with each other. I had maintained a good face while exchanging pleasantries with people and parents I hadn't seen in years, and even allowed Jimmy to take me for a spin on the dance floor. After all this time he still had two left feet, but he still knew how to make me laugh.

“He misses you a lot Jackie.” Jimmy said, while attempting to twirl me without twisting my arm in a different direction.

“Does he?” I asked, narrowing my eyes as we spoke of the man who had so shamelessly stolen my heart when we were kids.

“Of course he does,” He grinned. “What the fuck would make you think otherwise?”

“Well I haven't talked to him at all tonight, that's what makes me think otherwise Jim.”

“So go talk to him!” He stressed, leading me off the dance floor and to the bar for another drink.

I sighed and shook my head, knowing somehow that Jimmy was right. He had always had a knack for that.

'cause if you're not really here
then
I don't want to be either
I wanna be next to you

I walked across the outdoor garden and looked around for Brian. I had seen him come outside, but wasn't sure what direction he had wandered off to. I turned to look at a different spot when I saw a puff of smoke billow from behind a rose bush, and I instantly made my way over there.

I reached the man in question sitting on a cement bench, puffing away at what looked like a Marlboro, and I knew it was Brian.

“Brian?”

He turned around and exhaled the smoke he was holding in his lungs when he saw me.

“Jackie? What are you doing out here?”

“I could ask you the same thing,” I smirked. “Are you alright?”

“I'm okay I guess…” He trailed off.

“You guess?” I asked. “Don't lie to me Brian.”

He sighed and moved over, making room for me on the bench as he stomped out the but of his cigarette.

“Seeing you today, and just…how beautiful you look…crap, Jackie I really miss you.”

“I know you do.” I stated simply.

He looked at me questioningly before raising his eyebrows.

“Jimmy told me when he was attempting to dance with me before.”

He chuckled before wrapping an arm around my waist and pulling me flush into his side.

I looked up into the night sky
and see a thousand eyes staring back
and all around these golden beacons
I see nothing but black

I feel a way of something beyond them
I don't see what I can feel
if vision is the only validation
then most of my life isn't real

“Why'd I let you get away like that?” He asked, still holding me next to him.

“You didn't let me get away,” I said, letting my head fall to his shoulder, my auburn waves falling over my face to hide my tears. “I let myself get away love.”

“We grew up too fast, and grew apart even faster.”

I sniffled and hastily wiped at my eyes hoping he wouldn't notice, but knew Brian was always too quick to notice things like that.

“Don't cry, please.” He said, tilting my head up and wiping the lone tear off my cheek with the pad of his thumb.

“How can I not cry Bri?” I said, letting my head fall into my hands. “I moved away and just left everything behind as if you and I had never existed the way we did!”

“You didn't leave everything behind.” He said, rubbing my back.

“You don't know that!” I stressed.

“Yes sweetie I do,” He said, holding me against him as I sat up. “You wanna know how?”

“Of course I wanna know how.” I chuckled through my tears.

“Because you're here right now,” He smiled, and then pressed a soft kiss to my forehead. “If you had truly left everything behind then you wouldn't be here right now, and you and I wouldn't be sitting the way we are; Jackie if you forgot about everything we had, I would be too hurt to kiss you right now.”

And he dropped his head down to mine and let his thin lips cover my pink glossy ones in the most heartwarming kiss I had ever shared with him.

“Nothing matters when I'm not with you.” I said, holding his hand closer to my chest as I turned to look at him.

“I can't lose you again Jackie,” He said, wrapping his arms around me and holding me against his chest while rocking back and forth. “I love you too fucking much to do that.”

“I love you too Brian.”

I leaned up and pressed my lips to his again, and smiled as I felt his hand at the back of my neck to hold me in place.

“Are you gonna come home now?” He asked, once we had pulled away.

I snuggled closer to his chest and nodded.

“I am home Bri, I am home.”

I don't want to be either
I wanna be next to you
