Moving In And Moving
True to his word, Matt never left her side. After an hour with her on the day of the accident, the
nurse tried telling him visiting hours were up but she could tell before she'd even said it that the
term "Visiting hours" didn't apply to him. It would take a lot of very burly men forcibly removing
him from her room to get him to leave and to be honest, the nurse didn't see the harm in him
staying. He was obviously crushed by what had happened. Just one look at him was enough to tell that
he was terrified of being away from her. Luckily, with her being in her own room it wasn't too much
of a problem for him to stay even though he wasn't really supposed to. The nurse double checked it
would be alright and a fold up bed was placed in her room for him, not that he ever used it. He
stayed awake until his body physically shut down, and when that happened he'd often awake after a
few hours slumped over in the chair, his head against the side of her bed with her hand still in
his. The rest of the guys arrived the second visiting hours started and didn't leave until the
second it ended. It was generally then that Matt did the stuff he needed to do, like get changed or
eat or catch a few hours sleep. He felt a lot more comfortable knowing the guys were with her and he
never went so far that if they shouted, he wouldn't hear. He was dealing with it the best he could
but as one day faded into two and two into three, they could tell he was struggling. Panicking more
with every hour she stayed asleep. Still, although he often broke down to one of the guys just
outside her room, he never once spoke to her while he was upset. Every time he sat by her bed and
chatted to her, he did his best to sound upbeat and positive. It was always "When you get better"
not "IF you get better" He talked to her endlessly. About plans he had for them, places he wanted to
take her, things he wanted them to do together. Just simple stuff. But he was resolute that if there
was even the slightest chance she could hear, the thing she heard the most would be his voice. The
nurses who looked after her, changing her IV and doing the regular checks got used to him pretty
quickly. The nurse who dealt with him the first day, Kate, liked him a lot. She felt awful every
time she walked into the room and saw his miserable face and darkened, puffy eyes. He looked like
hell. 3 days of constant blind panic, no sleep, barely eating had worn him out completely. He looked
about ready to collapse but he still never wavered. Even when she tried convincing him to go home
and get a shower and a few hours sleep, he was shaking his head before she'd even finished the
suggestion. Obviously she didn't know anything about his past with Claire. All she saw was his
relentless devotion to be by her side. She thought it was more touching than any words and she the
more time she spent around him, the more she began to prey that Claire would pull through too. Just
so this sweet man didn't have to face that after everything he'd already coped with.
She felt very pleased on the night time check of the third day. She practically skipped into the
room. Matt was squished onto the side of the bed, his head resting on the pillow, his face nestled
in her hair. He was obviously leaning against the good side. Her head was no longer bandaged but she
had one hell of a nasty cut on the right side. About 3 inches long and pretty deep. She'd needed 13
stitches. He was half asleep with one arm resting over her tummy when Kate walked in. "Hey. You
still here?" she whispered. He lifted his head and smiled. "Yeah. I'm moving in." he laughed,
"Sorry. I know I shouldn't be up here" he said croakily, shuffling off the bed and sitting back in
the chair. Kate smiled and shook her head. "It's alright. You're not doing any harm. How you
feeling?" she asked. He shrugged and yawned. "I'm fine" he said with a small smile. She grinned and
nodded. "Well...I have good news. The scan we did this afternoon shows that the swelling around her
brain has gone down considerably. We can start lowering the meds that are keeping her sedated" she
said brightly. Matt looked momentarily shocked. "You mean....you're gunna wake her up?" he asked.
Kate shook her head. "No. She has to do that on her own. But we can stop forcibly keeping her
asleep. Don't get too excited. It's not gunna happen right away but....we'll start lowering them
tonight. Then.....hopefully it's just a matter of time before she regains consciousness" she smiled.
Matt sighed with relief and nodded. "So her brain is alright? I mean.....she'll be ABLE to wake up?"
he asked. Kate frowned slightly. "Well we won't know for certain if she'll fully recover until she
wakes up but the scans and the tests we've done on her brain activity are definitely both
encouraging." she nodded. "She responds to your voice" she added with a smile. Matt grinned as he
looked at Claire. "You do huh?" he laughed. Kate grinned and nodded. "Significantly more brain
activity when you're talking to her." she said happily. Matt turned to Claire and kissed her cheek
softly. "Then what do I have to say to get you to talk back?" He laughed. "Maybe I should just
whisper filth in your ear. That'd wake your ass up" he joked. Kate laughed and patted Matt on the
shoulder. "She shouldn't be too much longer now. Few days maybe depending on how quick her body gets
rid of the meds. I'm not saying it's over at ALL. I'm not saying everything will be fine but....it's
definitely a good sign" she said softly. Matt smiled and nodded. "It's the best sign yet" he
Matt felt a hell of a lot better after that. He'd felt defeated and tired and hopeless before, now
he had a renewed sense of optimism that eventually everything would be alright. He was realistic. He
knew it would be a long time before she was completely out of the woods and he knew she'd probably
have trouble walking and stuff but....at least she'd be awake. At least she'd definitely know he was
there. And he could finally tell her all the things he'd been desperate to tell her, all the things
he'd told her repeatedly while she was asleep. He'd be able to hear her voice. He missed it
desperately. He called the guys as soon as Kate left and told them the news. Brian had started
screaming down the phone. Zack had laughed like a maniac and Jimmy had burst into tears. They were
all so relieved. They promised to be over first thing in the morning and as Matt hung up, he was
smiling. Genuinely smiling. He sat by her bed all night wide awake, not bothered that he was
exhausted. Honestly, not even really feeling tired at all. He just felt so grateful that she'd be
alright. So relieved and so excited to be able to talk to her again. To look at her and see more
than just an injured, helpless little thing.
Just before visiting started, his cell phone rang. He didn't even look at the screen as he
answered. He just figured it was one of the guys calling to see if there'd been any progress.
"Hello?" he muttered with a smile, waiting for the expected yell of "IS SHE AWAKE YET?" Instead he
got a voice he'd totally forgotten about. Alicia. "WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU? IT'S BEEN ALMOST A
FUCKING WEEK MATT. REMEMBER ME? I THOUGHT YOU WERE FUCKING DEAD. NO NOTE, NO PHONE CALL. I'VE BEEN
OVER TO YOUR HOUSE AND NO ONE IS AROUND. WHAT THE FUCK?" she screamed down the phone. He frowned. To
be honest he'd not even given her a second though. "Oh....hey. Umm....Alicia....I'm sorry I didn't
call but....a lot of shit has gone down in the past few days. It never even occurred to me to call
you. I'm sorry" he sighed. "SO YOU FUCKING SHOULD BE. WHAT THE HELL IS SO IMPORTANT THAT YOU
COULDN'T LET ME KNOW?" she yelled. He rolled his eyes. He wasn't In the mood for this. Frankly, the
past few days had really made him realise what was important in his life and as awful as it sounded,
she wasn't. "There was an accident. I've been at the hospital with Claire. She's been really hurt."
he said simply. Alicia snorted down the phone. "You've been at the hospital for the past week?" she
asked doubtfully. "Past 4 days" he corrected. "Look I just had more important stuff to worry about"
he said bluntly. "ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I'VE BEEN GOING OUT OF MY MIND MATT. I WAS SO WORRIED. DO YOU
HAVE ANY IDEA HOW THAT FUCKING FEELS?" she spat. Matt stood up. He was trying to keep his voice low
but that pushed him too far. "Are you fucking kidding ME?" he growled back. "I've been sat beside
the bed of the girl I love for the past 4 days solid. I didn't even know if she'd fucking make it.
Don't you DARE talk to me about worried" he snarled. "The girl you WHAT? I'm your fucking girlfriend
Matt." she yelled back. He rolled his eyes and paced the room. "Oh come the fuck on Alicia. We
weren't together. Not really. You were looking for an easy fuck and I was looking for something to
distract me from how I really felt. Don't make out like you just lost the love of your fucking life.
You barely even know me" he said angrily. "Well........." she paused as though quickly trying to
think of a way to retaliate that would be as effective as his. "....maybe I'm the lucky one then.
Maybe I don't want to fucking know you. Under that body you're just another waste of space loser"
she said in a tone that sounded almost proud. Matt had to stop himself from laughing. Like he gave a
shit what she thought! After everything that had happened with Claire, she didn't even register as a
blip on the radar. He'd been aware all along that it wasn't a relationship. It was sex. Easy, hassle
free booty calls that they pretending was something else for all of a split second. It was nothing.
He didn't mean anything to her just the same as she didn't mean anything to him. She was getting
angry for effect, not because she actually felt it. He smiled and nodded his head. "Maybe you're
right Alicia. Maybe you are the lucky one. So maybe you should just leave me the fuck alone from now
on" he growled. "FINE. FUCK YOU" she shouted, hanging up the phone. Matt tossed his cell onto the
fold up bed and rolled his eyes. "God, what a bitch" he muttered. "Well......someone's a grumpy boy
today" he heard faintly whispered from behind him.
