The Prologue
By Children of the Grave

??????????? Killman, known and named for his quick and plentiful murders of opposing gangs' members, shuffled into the room accompanied by two fellow gang members. He shut the door and paused, waiting for business to start. He looked around for familiar faces as the boss took a head count. None were seen; they were killed. A brawl between his gang and a rival gang had taken place the day before and they were going over losses and follow up actions.

??????????? "38 men, we had 54 yesterday! We just need to hope they suffered more than we did. With these significant losses, we will need to take a... quieter approach," stated Grol, leader of the Greduls as he gave a glance at Killman. "This will be dealt with in the following way: we will use a series of assassinations to weaken them. Some of their information and communication will be lost, but our main reason is to eliminate their seasoned fighters."

??????????? "Who will be sent?" questioned Spith, a seasoned fighter for the Greduls.

??????????? "The selection will be few, but enough. We will send you along with Jelos, Hortom, and Killman." Eyes pinpointed the men as their names were announced. Killman felt the eyes tear at his flesh as the burden of killing high rankers was placed upon him.

??????????? "And the hits?" asked Spith.

??????????? "Obviously, their leader: Opel. Other hits will include Grund, Faleth, Calgor, and Fithril. But more important than any of them is Vega. Vega will be yours, Killman. Once these links are broken, it's open season boys, kill away."

??????????? "What if we fail? And how will we time these? If we kill at different times, they'll be alerted," questioned Spith.

??????????? "Ah, trusted Spith, the answers are simple. We won't fail. Opel is open, so a hit will be made when he is at the market with minimal guards. The rest will be handled when they carry out duties. I want you to follow them like a second shadow. As for Vega, openly challenge him. He thinks he can take on the world, but he will be put in his place soon enough."

??????????? "I think if Vega fights me one on one, he will win," said Killman with a bit of stress in his voice.

??????????? "No worries, be faithful. Challenge him to a closed area battle. He won't be able to pull any stunts." A smile broke Grol's face as he spoke. "Victory is ours, let's take it."

??????????? The men filed out of the room when Grol gave a dismissing wave. The assassins were left with their leader. All but Killman suited up for several days work. Killman simply grabbed a jacket, his sword, his bow, and his quiver. All was silent as they prepared. Departing one by one, Killman was the last to leave as he was the only one facing almost certain death.

??????????? He climbed the wall across the ally and leapt onto the roof. With no distinct emotion written on his face, he crossed the roof to the other side. On the other side, the market was seen. He paced the building looking for Vega in the streets below.

??????????? After an unsuccessful scout, he headed across building tops to the other side of the city where Vega's home was. It was well known that Vega lived in a bar with his younger sister Helena. No one had ever gone to challenge him there in fear that he would kill them.

??????????? Killman arrived at the bar at sunset. He peered through the window to see if it was clear to enter. Vega sat with his sister behind the bar. Killman dragged in a deep breath and sighed. He didn't want to have to kill him in front of Helena. He had no choice at this point.

??????????? Opening the door, he entered calmly. Vega glanced up and the back to the pages of a book as he read aloud to Helena. Helena was young, only eight years old. Killman laid his bow and quiver on a table as he drew his sword. Vega once again glanced up and then back down.

??????????? Helena opened her eyes, revealing the most beautiful eyes Killman had ever seen. He frowned as Vega closed the book and set it down. Helena looked at Vega in a pleading way, and he smiled reassuringly. He stood up and pushed his stool in. He stood on the bar counter and drew his sword.

??????????? "So, I take it no friendly business is taking place now?" asked Vega in a smirk voice.

??????????? Killman's eyes blazed. "You killed my friends... And I will kill you, or die trying."

??????????? "Ah, you must be the determined Killman. I've heard about you. It seems a waste to kill you in my home in front of my sister."

??????????? Killman ran forward taking a swing at Vega's legs. Vega flipped over the counter turning in the air. He landed close to Killman's open back. He stabbed through Killman's back and into the wood of the counter.

??????????? "You need to be a little faster."

??????????? Killman's gaze faded to black as he fell limp onto the counter.
