I shook my hair out of the knotted ponytail it had become. “Thank you, Brian.” I
kissed his cheek before letting my chin rest on his shoulder.
He remained starring into the line where the ocean met the sky. “You sounded like you needed
it. What's wrong, Tabbie? And I swear if you tell me `nothing' I'll leave you here.”
A long sigh escaped my lungs. “I'm engaged.”
“So Danny finally asked. Congrats.” Brian was quiet for a moment. “At least
that's what I'd say if I didn't know you as well as I do. So…”
The world thinks he's some badass who doesn't take shit from anybody and will ingest his poisons in
every way possible. To the world he's Synyster Gates. But to me he's the brother my parents never
gave birth to. He knows just about every detail of my personal life. “So he's not
He chuckled. “He's like the other end of the spectrum, darlin'. Then why'd you say
Brian nodded. “I see. Now you get to explain, and please remember that I am on your
I climbed off the back of his chopper so I could move around. “I'm never going to have to
worry about another girl wanting Danny. If I need him he's there with a snap of my fingers. He's
got me on a fucking pedestal that's at least three feet above the one he's got Bill Gates on.”
I paused for his snicker. “He's not Matt, Brian. And he loves me. Nobody ever loves a fat
chick, so I've gotta take it where I can get it, right?”
He shook his head slowly. “Wrong.”
“Fine. Then name five who would want a girl like me.”
Brian held up his index finger. “Shadows.” He extended his middle finger as well.
“Matt Sanders.” Next was his ring finger. “M.Shadows.” Followed by his
pinky. “Matthew Charles Sanders.” And last his thumb. “Matt.”
I shook my head. “That was cheating.”
He shrugged. “You didn't say five different people. It's okay if you still love him, Tabs,
because he still loves you too.”
“But I'm engaged to Danny.” I sighed, defeated. “He's a great guy and doesn't
deserve to have his heart broken.”
“So instead you'll just marry him and keep lying to him? It'll kill you, Tabbie. He's
already murdered the girl who could out drink all of us and didn't give a shit if she was being
proper or not. You think I don't notice, but when I call you and he's around you talk
“It's called growing up.”
“No, it's called giving in and dying.” Brian shook his head. “Come on, I'll take
When we got back to my house I didn't want to get off the chopper. Matt was sitting on my front
“I'll call you later, darlin'.” Brian kissed my cheek and nodded his greeting to Matt
before riding away.
I couldn't just leave him outside, the neighbors would probably call the cops. “Get inside
then,” I sighed as I held open the door.
“How was your breakfast date?” Matt asked on his way into the house.
“Disastrous, which is probably exactly what you want to hear.”
The corners of his mouth turned up into a small smile he was trying to hide. “And your ride
“You've ruined me, you know that right?” My question was loud and angry in my quiet
His jaw went slack with genuine surprise. “How the fuck did I do that?”
“I'm fucking engaged and all I can think about when I'm with him is you! I pick apart
every single fucking thing about him based on your personality and what it feels like to be in your
arms. He won't even fucking call me Tabbie because it's something you came up with!”
“And what, I'm just suppose to leave you alone?” In two strides Matt was in my face,
holding his left arm up so all I could see what his sacred heart tattoo. “You remember this?
I fucking got this for you. And in case you've some how magically forgotten you've got one
How could I forget? With out even trying to I'd look at it every day in my mirror. Every time I go
into my tattoo shop my eyes automatically seek out the picture of our tattoos side by side. His
forearm. The space between my shoulder blades. “I haven't forgotten.” Not to mention
that every time I wear a tank top Danny ask me when I'm going to get it removed. He's even offered
to pay for it.
He sighed and let his forearms rest on my shoulders. “Why do you push me, Tabbie?”
I leaned against the wall behind me, taking him with me. “Habit, I suppose. We use to have
some great sex after fights.”
Matt smiled, eyes closing. “Yes, we did.”
I let my own eyes close. “Danny's horrible at it. He never even last more then five
minutes.” Matt use to be able to go forever. And it was never a question of if I'd orgasm,
it was how many times.
His lips were on my throat, resting just above the pulse point. Matt was waiting for me to tell him
to stop or to keep going.
My hand reached up to tangle itself in his hair.
It was a “yes” and he knew it.
Soft kisses on my collarbone woke me from the light sleep I'd been in.
Matt beamed down at me, dimples showing. “Hi.”
“I'm going to walk funny for days,” I joked.
He chuckled. “Just tell everyone you went horse back riding or something.”
“Close enough.” I cuddled against him, the feel of his skin against mine was
comforting. It helped me push away the thought that I'd just cheated on my fianc?.
“I love you, Tabbie,” Matt whispered.
I took a deep breath. “I love you too.”
“It's not that easy,” I sighed. “A part of me loves him too. I can't just make
the last some odd years of feelings go away.”
“I know.” His head moved to rest on my stomach where my hand promptly went to playing
with his hair. “I still love Val even though I know she's part of the reason you left me to
“If she hadn't come into our lives we'd probably be married with kids by now.”
“There's no probably to it,” Matt's voice was sad.
“Because Brian was helping me look for a ring.”
I stopped breathing, eyes going wide and filling with tears. “He never told me.”
“I told him I'd kill him if he ever did.” He sat back up and looked down at me.
“Please don't cry.”
“How can I not? I fucked up everything because I'm fucking insecure.”
Matt kissed the tears from my cheeks. “It can still happen.”
That only made me cry harder and turn away from him. But I should have known he wouldn't just leave
me alone to wallow in my self-pity. Matt wrapped his arms around me, pulling me back against him,
and started mumbling things to soothe me.
The tears slowed to a stop after a while and I knew what had to happen.
“I need to be alone for awhile,” my words sounded choked.
He pressed his lips to the side of my head. “I'll go make us something to eat.”
“No, I mean for a few days or so…maybe longer. I need time to think. I need to figure
out how to tell Danny what I just did.”
Matt was quiet a few moments. “Does that mean you're calling off the engagement?”
I took a deep breath. “I don't know. I just need to think.”
