Better Sorry Than
When I was far enough down the beach I collapsed in the sand and pulled my hood over my head.
A little while later Val came and sat next to me, “What's up, sweetie? What happened?”
I couldn't tell her what happened right away and she could tell that. She took my hand and laid
down next to me, waiting until I could finally tell her. Finally after about ten minutes I rolled
over to fully face her.
“I'm not ready to have sex with Zacky and he wasn't happy about that. He kept trying even
though I told him I didn't want to and then he was like `well you know Amy was ready two years ago.'
Like he's comparing me to her really?” I cried burying my face in my hood.
“He did what?!” she screamed sitting up. “I'm gonna go kick some ass,” she
went to stand up but I pulled her back.
“Don't, it's not worth it,” I said not letting go of her hand.
“I don't want to see you upset like this though,” she said pulling me into a hug.
“Maybe it's just my fault. Maybe I'm overreacting. Maybe I should've just done it,” I
cried into her shoulder.
Val grabbed my arms and moved me so she was holding onto me, arms length away as she stared at me
sternly. “Ryleigh Elizabeth Haner, listen to me. It is not your fault don't even think for a
second it is. You are not overreacting. There is obviously some reason you did not want to have sex
with him. Never feel obligated to `just do it' especially if you are not ready,” she lectured
“Yes, mom,” I joked but I really did appreciate it. She knew what she was talking
about. Her and Matt were so perfect together, I always looked up to them as a couple. Even before I
knew them as well as I do now.
She pulled me back into a hug as Matt and Johnny approached us. “You can come back to the
house now. We talked to Zacky, calmed him down, and he just passed out,” Matt told us and I
let go of Val and hugged Matt.
“I don't want her in the same room as him tonight,” Val told Matt.
“Yeah, we talked bout that,” Johnny motioned to Matt, who was still holding me and
rubbing my back. “We were going to put her in with Lacey and I was going to sleep downstairs
on the couch,” Johnny explained.
I pulled away from Matt and looked at Johnny, “you don't have to do that, I can sleep on the
“No, I insist. Come here,” he said turning around and crouching down. I sighed before
walking over to him and jumped on his back.
“So, I have a question,” Matt said as we started to walk back. “How hard did you
have to slap him to leave such an intense handprint on his face?”
“Oh my god,” I said burying my face in Johnny's shoulder. “Was it really
“I'm just glad I'm not him,” he responded and I groaned into Johnny's shoulder.
“Don't feel bad about, he deserved it,” Johnny assured me.
When we got back to the house Johnny brought me upstairs to the room Lacey was already in. I looked
at him as he went to leave. “Don't worry about it. Go to bed,” he said as he walked out
the door, closing it behind himself.
I fell asleep a short time later but it didn't last long. When I woke up the sun was coming up and
the house was still quiet. I walked out of the room and down to the kitchen looking for a clock.
When I found one, I saw it was only seven o'clock. I should not be awake. I wandered outside back to
the beach. I sat there for about an hour before I looked over to see Sam taking a seat next to me.
“You shouldn't be awake,” I told her.
“No one should be awake right now. What's your excuse?” she asked looking out to the
“I can't sleep,” I said flatly, “you?”
“I have no idea.” We sat there in silence for a few minutes before she asked,
“what happened last night?”
“Do you not remember?” I asked looking over at her. I didn't think she drank that much.
“No, I know what I did. What happened with you? The only time you can't sleep is when
something is bothering you,” I hated how well she knew me sometimes. When I told her what had
happened she had a similar reaction to Val's and wanted to harm him. But, once I got her to calm
down she said, “now I feel bad about what I did last night.”
I looked at her suspiciously, “what did you do last night?”
“I slept with Brian,” she said barely audible.
“What? Are you serious?” I screamed and she nodded. “Oh my god. Tell me
everything,” I said quickly. She looked at me and I realized, “wait, don't, that's my
brother that's gross.”
She laughed, “yeah sorry about that.”
“This is so not fair. You're my best friend you should be telling me this stuff, but you're
dating my stupid brother.”
She hugged me and said, “you'll get used to it.”
“Yeah, you're hoping cause you're dying to tell me. I can feel it,” I laughed.
“You know me so well,” she paused before saying, “you ready to go back?”
“Yes and no. It was a good weekend so I'm ready to go back but I am not ready to go back to
practicing,” I told her.
“Yeah, but one more week and we're done. We can make it,” she said as we heard someone
else walking up behind us.
“What are you guys doing up?” Brian asked taking a seat next to Sam.
“Couldn't sleep,” we said at the same time.
“What time do you think we'll be getting out of here? he asked.
“Probably whenever everybody gets up and gets something to eat. But, I want to stay after
everyone leaves to clean up is that okay?” Sam said leaning against him.
“Can I stay with you guys to help out?” I asked.
“Yeah, not a problem,” Sam answered.
After a few hours everyone was awake, except Zacky. “We should get going soon.” Val
said when everyone was gathered around the kitchen.
“Zacky's still asleep,” Lacey brought up.
“Yeah, we're thinking about just throwing him in the back of his car and having Jimmy
drive,” Matt announced.
“Well we should probably start packing then,” she said now getting up and encouraging
everyone else to do the same.
“Ryleigh, Bri, and I are gonna stay for awhile to pick up stuff so my parents don't freak
next time they come up here,” Sam said walking to the fridge to grab a water.
“Oh, do you want anymore help we could stay,” Val offered.
“No, it's fine it shouldn't even take that long with the three of us.”
After everyone had left Sam assigned us jobs to start with, “Bri, you start with the kitchen
and I don't mean just throw the cups and cans away, I mean wash the dishes, counters, tables and
anything else that looks dirty. Ry you and me are going to go take all the sheets off the beds and
throw them in the wash then put new sheets on them. Let's go.”
It didn't take us long to get the sheets off the beds it was just the laundry that was going to
take awhile. It made sense that she wanted to start the wash before putting new sheets on the beds.
“So, are you going to tell Brian what happened with Zacky?” Sam asked as we dragged the
sheets to the laundry room.
“I don't think I should. Bri might freak out on Zacky, I don't want start anything between
them. If Zacky wants to tell him he can I just don't want to be the one to do it,” I said as
Sam started loading the washing machine.
As we walked back upstairs I asked, “Should I text him or call him?”
“No, you should not. He's the one that screwed up, he has to contact you. I swear if you text
him first I will punch you,” she threatened as we pulled clean sheets out of the closet and
went to different rooms to start making beds.
It took just over an hour to get the house looking like it did when we first got there. Once we
were done we just sat around waiting for the laundry to finish. Once we folded it and put it away we
were on the road back to Huntington. When we finally got home I ran straight up to my room, not
really wanting to talk to anyone. As I went to lay down on my bed my phone went off and I looked
down to see Zacky's name.
I hesitated, not sure if I wanted to read the text but finally decided I needed to. I flipped open
my phone and read, “hey baby, I'm so sorry for the way I acted last night. I'm a dumbass. Can
we talk about this tomorrow?” I shut my phone without responding I didn't know what to say.
Thank you to WeAreTheRevenant, Hanny Gates, WishxOnxAxStar, Hallie Vengeance and *Nothing but
