It's Not You
I was convinced he was going to stay with Amy. I didn't understand why he would, but I was
convinced. I mean, I thought we were okay when I was talking to him and Brian last night, but then
he barely acknowledged me five minutes later in the hallway. Then this morning when I saw him
walking into school he didn't even look at me. Clearly he didn't want anything to do with me.
I was pulled out of my thoughts when Sam slammed her locker shut. “I seriously thought I lost
you there for a minute,” she said laughing. “You were so lost in thought.”
Before I could respond the locker room was suddenly filled with screaming and what sounded like
crying. “Amy,” we heard Ally trying to calm her down, “It's going to be okay, this
has happened before you'll get back together soon.”
My jaw dropped and Sam's eyes went wide before Amy respond with, “No! He said this was it,
he's done for good,” she choked out. “He said there's someone else.”
My heart stopped. Was she serious? Sam was silently freaking out in front of me while I just sat
still against the lockers, frozen, trying to hear if they were going to say anymore about it.
“I'm sorry Ames, I don't know what to say to right now other than you have to try to pull
yourself together or Heidi is going to be pissed. Just try to get through practice we can't bring
our personal problems into practice. Come on it'll be okay,” Ally said trying to make Amy feel
Finally, Amy was able to pull it together in time for practice. Of course the first thing Heidi
wanted to work on after our warm up was new stunts. Trying new stunts you've never tried before
requires full attention from everyone. Out of the five people in my group I'm pretty sure we had the
full attention of about one and a half people. This was not going to be a good night.
The first time we tried it I didn't even make it into the air. The next time I made it into the air
but couldn't manage to lock my leg and Amy and Ally's arms were shaking uncontrollably. The only
thing that kept me from falling flat onto the mat was Sam diving underneath me. The other three were
pretty useless as I fell.
Noticing our struggles, our coach came over to see what was wrong. “What's up with you guys
tonight? You are one of my strongest groups I expected you to be one of the first groups to get
this. If you keep up the way you've been going tonight Ryleigh's going to get hurt again and we
can't afford to lose her again with regionals coming up.”
Ally was the one to speak up for the group, “Sorry Heidi, we've been a little distracted
we'll try harder.”
“If these are personal distractions we're going to have problems. You leave your problems at
the locker room doors, remember? Distractions are how people get hurt, you need to focus one hundred
percent on what you're doing,” she warned us before walking over to another group.
“Okay guys, I know we all have shit going on right now but we gotta do what she said. Try
you're hardest to forget about whatever you're dealing with and make this work,” Ally said
probably trying her hardest to help us get more motivated. The only person it seemed to work fully
on was Holly, my front spotter. Though, we did improve considerably and were finally able to pull
off the stunt pleasing both ourselves and our coach.
Finally, after two more hours of nothing but tumbling and conditioning it was time to go home.
“Hey, I have to talk to Heidi for a minute but you can just go head out to the car I'll be
there soon,” Sam told me as we finished putting away the mat we rolled up.
As she walked over to Heidi, I grabbed my bag and headed for the door. I was looking down at my
phone as I walked out the second set of doors leading outside. I didn't look up until I was just at
the parking lot and when I did I saw Zacky parked in the first spot in the front row, and he was
standing leaning up against his car. I wasn't sure what to do so I decided to pretend he wasn't
there and just walk in the direction of Sam's car.
“Ryleigh,” Zacky called to me, motioning for me to go over to him. I hesitated for a
second before walking over to him slowly. He smiled as I approached him, but, I couldn't return it.
I was far too drained of everything at the moment.
“What's up Zacky,” I said, confused as to what he was doing here.
“I broke up with Amy,” he said softly, knowing she would be walking out at some point.
“Yeah, I know,” I said bitterly. He looked at me sympathetically.
“Look, I'm sorry for how I've been acting recently, you don't deserve it, and for all the
times you've had to put with Amy's drama just because I'm an idiot. You also didn't deserve to be
dragged into the middle of our relationship and I'm sorry. Basically, there's a really long list of
things I should apologize to you for,” he hesitated before saying, “And, I broke up with
her for good because I realized the you are the one I really wanted to be with this whole
Despite how awful and drained I felt, I was able to manage a smile when he said that.
“Zacky,” I said as I went to hug him but stopped myself.
He went to return it but stopped, confused when I had stopped. “What's wrong?”
He laughed and pulled me into a hug anyway before saying, “you're beautiful.”
I wasn't really sure how long we had stood there but I was snapped out of it when someone behind me
cleared their throat. I turned around to see Sam standing there waving innocently. “I don't
mean to interrupt this adorable moment but I just wanted to say that I assume you no longer need a
ride home and I need to tell you something slightly important but no more important than this so
carry on,” she said quickly before running off in the direction of her car.
“I should probably get you home,” he said looking down at me. “You're disgusting
after all,” he mocked.
I laughed and hit him lightly on the arm before walking over to the other side of the car and
getting in. The ride to my house was silent, we didn't need to discuss anything else right now. He
just held my hand until he pulled into my driveway.
I looked over to him before I got out of the car and her said, “I'll see you tomorrow.”
He looked unsure of what to say or do next, so I decided for him. I leaned over and kissed him
making sure he knew I wanted to be with him too. We didn't need to verbalize it. “See you
later,” I said as I picked up my bag, opened the door, and got out of his car.
I ran inside to find Sam on my bed in my dark room, which scared the crap out of me. “Sam!
what the fuck are you doing here?” I screamed as I turned the light on.
“Waiting for you to get home, duh. I told you I have something I need to tell you. But, first
tell me what happened!” she said excitedly, getting up and pulling me over to my bed making me
sit across from her.
“He was waiting outside after practice and said he had a lot of things he wanted to apologize
to me for and then he told me he broke up with Amy for good because he realized the I was the one he
really wanted to be with the whole time,” I told her, unable to control my smile.
“That is adorable. So you guys are together now?” she asked and I nodded. “Aww
I'm so happy for you. It's about time! But, I do have to tell you this. After I talked to Heidi, I
was walking out of the gym behind Amy and Ally. They were talking about how Zacky told Amy there was
someone else and they were wondering if he had cheated on her. They were pretty pissed off and then
they walk out to see you hugging him. They were all `gasp! Ryleigh?' So, you may wanna be a little
careful around them for a bit,” she said warning me.
“Ugh, great the rest of the season is going to be just peachy with them,” I said as I
leaned back so I was lying across the end of my bed.
“Yeah, they're gonna suck, but, at least you have your boy now to make you feel
better,” she said winking at me.
