Confusion And Frustration In Modern Times
By AmandA7X

Ryleigh's POV

“Zacky wants you to come with me for break today,” Kaylie said, taking her seat next to me.

“What?” I practically screamed, “Why?”

She looked scared, “he said he has to talk to you. What happened?”

“Fuck, I'm so not ready for this. I can not have this conversation with him in public. What the fuck am I supposed to do?” I half whispered to myself.

Biology passed far too quickly and before I knew it I was heading to break with Kaylie. I walked into the room and was relieved when I saw that Zacky wasn't there yet. We sat down in our usual spots and I put my head down in my arms on the desk as Kaylie told me she was going to go to the bathroom. A few minutes later I felt a hand on my back and instantly jumped up.

“Wow, sorry Ry. Didn't mean to scare you. Paranoid much?” he said with a laugh, taking Kay's seat next to me.

“Look Zacky, I know you read the text and honestly I don't want to have this conversation here,” I said softly so only he could hear.

He pulled his desk as close as he could to mine and said, “we are having this conversation. Meet me behind the gym right after school.” He whispered it right in my ear sending a cold chill down my spine. Before I could even say anything in response he got up and walked out the door.

Kaylie came back in the room about a minute later and said, “he's still not here?”

“No he was here, but he left again,” she didn't question me further. I think the tone in my voice told her I wasn't going to say anymore.

When the last bell of the day rang I practically ran to the spot behind the gym. Not because I really wanted to talk to Zacky, but because I was afraid it would take too long and I wouldn't have enough time to change before practice. I slowed my pace as he came into view, leaning against the side of the school, lighting a cigarette.

I walked up to him, grabbed the cigarette out of his mouth and threw it on the ground. “That's bad for you.”

He laughed and smiled at me before saying, “how do you know I read it?”

“Sam asked me the next day if I got it cause I never responded and when I checked I saw it already in my read messages,” I told him, walking behind a tree.

“Do you hate me for reading it?” he asked as he walked around the other side of the tree to stand in front of me.

“I don't hate you. I'm more just curious what you have to say about it. We can cover the whole invasion of privacy part later,” I said as I walked by him and back over to the side of the building.

“Why didn't you say anything when I told you how I felt about you,” he turned around but stayed next to the tree.

“I couldn't. I didn't know what to say. I never thought you would feel that way,” I told him looking down at the ground.

“How long?” he asked, starting to walk towards me.

“How long have you felt that way?” he was standing right in front of me now.

“Pretty much since the first time I met you,” I couldn't look at him.

He placed his left hand on the wall above my right shoulder and lifted my chin so I was looking at him with the other. “And you didn't say anything?” I felt like he was blaming this all on me.

I placed my right hand on his chest and pushed him away from me, “you've been on and off with Amy for almost two years and you didn't say anything to me?” I asked remembering what he said about why he would break up with her and get back together with her. “Don't try to blame this on me, Z.”

“Should I break up with her?” he asked moving closer to me. I looked up at him shocked he just asked me that.

“Are you serious?” I yelled at him. “I can't tell you that. That is on you one hundred percent. You know how I feel, now it's up to you,” I told him before pushing him out of the way and running back around to the entrance of the gym.

I got to the locker room door as Sam was walking out. “Where have you been,” she yelled at me. “And why do you look like someone just killed your cat?”

“It's nothing, I have to change,” I said running past her.

After I changed I walked out of the locker room and sat down on the mat next to Sam without even looking at her. “Seriously, what's up?” she said softly.

I looked around to see who was near us before I looked at Sam and whispered, “he asked me if he should break up with Amy.”

“You said yes right?” she said it like it was no big deal.

I looked at her with the same confused and hurt look I gave Zacky, “No! I can't decide that for him. I won't.” I lowered my voice, “I can't do that to her. As much as she may not be my favorite person in the world I can't tell her boyfriend to break up with her. He has to decide he doesn't want to be with her anymore.”

“But if you said yes you'd finally be getting what you've wanted for how long?” she couldn't understand what was going on in my head.

“You don't always get what you want,” I shrugged. “I never wanted to be a flyer,” I admitted.

“But, you're one of the best on the team,” she was still confused.

“Just because I'm one of the best doesn't mean I like it. I'm terrified of heights and I don't trust people. Those are the two big factors of being a flyer, but I got over it because I didn't have a choice, if he still wants to be with her i'll get over it,” I explained standing up. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Amy walking towards me.

“Hey, Ryleigh, I was wondering if you could help me with something?” she asked as she reached me.

“Yeah, sure what's up?” I had a hard time looking at her.

“Since Zacky's birthday is next week I was wondering, since you probably know him pretty well since he's always at your house, if you could help me figure out what to get him,” I wasn't sure if she was serious or if this was a trick question.

“His birthday isn't next week, it's next month,” I told her as I crossed my arms.

“What are you talking about?” It's next week, November 11th,” she said as she put her hands on her hips.

“His birthday is December 11th. Trust me, he's spent a lot of birthday's at my house,” I told her as I turned to walk over to my bag. I opened it and searched for my phone. Once I found it I looked around to make sure Heidi hadn't arrived yet. I sent a text to Zacky that said, “You're girlfriend can't even remember when your birthday is. =x”

Zacky's POV

“What the fuck am I supposed to do, Bri?” I asked, sitting across from him. He was playing something on his guitar probably not even listening to me. I just held my guitar in my lap, there was too much going on in my head to concentrate on it.

“I really don't think I can help you,” he said finishing the song. “Ryleigh's my sister and I know she really likes you, so I'm sure you can guess what my opinion is.” he started playing random chords. “She's going to be home in a little while why don't you talk to her?”

“I already did today and it ended with her not being so happy with me,” I said standing up and leaning my guitar up against the wall.

“What did you do,” he spun in his chair to look at me.

“I kinda asked her if I should break up with Amy and she got pissed told me she couldn't be the one to decide that for me and ran away,” I started walking around the room, I couldn't sit still right now.

He laughed, “you're an idiot.”

“Yeah, I'm starting to get that,” I also laughed. I pulled my phone out of my pocket to see I had a text from Ryleigh from almost three hours ago. Forgot I put my phone on silent. “Ry, sent me a text that says `You're girlfriend can't even remember when your birthday is.' why would they be talking about that?”

“Why don't you ask her when she gets home?” he said as we heard someone running up the stairs and she walked into Brian's room. “Well speak of the devil,” he looked at the clock, “you're home early.”

“Yeah, Heidi was so excited we got second place she let us go a whole half hour early!” she faked enthusiasm. “You were talking about me?” she asked looking back and fourth between us.

“I just got your text,” I told her holding my phone up. “What were you talking about?”

“Oh, she thought your birthday was November 11th,” she failed at trying to hide a smirk and Brian laughed.

I just stared at her in disbelief, “you're kidding right?” After two years she still couldn't remember?

Her smirk turned into a full smile and she said, “I wish I could say I was.” she looked down at her phone that just lit up before looking at Brian and saying, “Sam wanted me to let you know she didn't stay tonight because she has a crap load of homework to do.” With that she walked out of the room.

I walked back over to the chair I was previously sitting in and sat down before saying, “I have to break up with her.”

“Don't say that if you don't plan on breaking up with her for good. I seriously can't take it anymore,” his tone surprised me and I think he realized that when he continued, “sorry, I don't really like her.”

“Yeah, I could kinda tell. But the next time I break up with her it will be for good, and I have to do it soon,” I told him standing back up and walking over to grab my guitar to put it in it's case.

“You leaving?”

“Yeah, I have a lot to think about I'll see you later,” I said as I headed for the door.

As I went to shut Brian's door and walk down the stairs Ryleigh walked out of her room. She wasn't paying attention and noticed me just before she was about to walk into me, “Oh, hey Zacky,” she smiled.

“Hey, I gotta go,” I rushed before running down the stairs. When I got home I threw my guitar case on my bed and started pacing around my room.

So the obvious choice here is Ryleigh, right? She makes more sense. I've known her longer. She probably knows me better which is sad. She's liked me for years and never said anything. Put up with hearing about Amy and I's relationship for almost two years and was able to make it seem like she didn't have a problem with it. But, there's a reason I've been with Amy so long right?

Yeah, she can be a bitch sometimes but that's mostly with her friends. She gave me a chance even though I'm so much different than her and her friends. She came to band practices and acted like she cared even though she probably didn't. She was my first real girlfriend. But do I love her? After two years? If I have to ask myself it's probably a no, right? I just like her a lot?

I could love Ryleigh. I do think it's awesome she breaks stereotypes. She doesn't care what anyone thinks of her. She doesn't let anyone influence what she likes.

Amy is pretty much a clone of her friend's and they're all dependent on each other. They aren't original and look like just about every other girl in school.

Though, the sex is good. But, that's not really fair to Ryleigh. Ryleigh can be rather emotional and moody. She doesn't trust people very easily and she's stubborn. But, she is a girl should I expect different? Not exactly sure how I feel about dating my best friend's sister, though. Yeah, he doesn't have a problem with it but is that too weird?

I think I made my decision a long time ago.

Oh, the decisions. Who do you think he's gonna pick? Let me know and I'll try to get the next chapter up soon =)

Thanks to girheartstacos and Hanny Gates for reviewing and *Nothing but Fiction* for the last two chapters!
