Alert The Audience
The rest of the week was long and painful. Three hours of practice every night where all I could do
was watch. Until Thursday when I was cleared to practice again and Heidi had me working non-stop on
stunting and tumbling. We ended up having a full practice before the football game on Friday too.
Outside of practice though, I had been spending more time with Sam, Brian, Jimmy, Matt, Val and
Johnny. Sam and I had learned that Val never really liked us because we were cheerleaders, but
changed her mind when she found out we weren't normal cheerleaders. No one had really heard from
Zacky all week and I felt awful because I knew it was my fault.
Saturday morning we had to meet in the gym at school at 10 am to run through the routine a few
times and to get our hair and make-up done. Our hair was done easy this year so we could do it
ourselves, well most of us. It was just a high pony tail. Though, Amy and I both have a certain type
of hair that was making it impossible to get it as high on top of our heads as our coach wanted
them. It was finally just the two of us in the locker room fighting with our hair.
“My hair is just not made to fucking do this!” I yelled ripping the elastic out of my
hair for what had to of been the 50th time, at least.
Amy laughed also pulling hers down, “Yeah, this is getting to be ridiculous. My hair is just
too straight it won't stay in place.”
As we continued to try deal with our hair problem Amy apologized again, “Ryleigh, I know I've
said it already but I'm really sorry about what happened. I apologized to the rest of our group too
I didn't realize how hard the past two days would be for all of us to get you ready for
“It's not your fault don't worry about. People sneeze, it happens,” I said with a laugh
and continued, “Zacky also apologized for you when he was at my house last weekend.”
“Why was Zacky at your house?” she said it rather harshly and I froze. The only thing
that came to mind was the kiss and no actual reason for what could have brought him to my house.
“Uhm...he's friends with my brother,” I finally managed to get out, less than
“Oh, yeah that's right. Sorry, I completely forgot,” she didn't seem to suspect my
questionable tone, thank God. “I GOT IT!” I looked up to see her finally getting her
hair into the right spot and quickly hair spraying her whole head to make sure it didn't move.
“Here, let me help you,” she said walking towards me as I flipped my hair over to try
With her help, we finally got my hair the way my coach wanted it. Great, she just helped me achieve
the impossible and all I can think about is how I made out with her boyfriend. This is going to be a
The bus ride to the competition was annoying as usual. Eighteen screaming cheerleaders on a bus
that echos is not fun at all. When we finally got there we checked in and did our warm up run
through of our routine to make sure we didn't have anything in our routine that could get us
disqualified. By the time we were done with that and went to take our seats on the floor in front of
the mat, people were already starting to gather in the stands. I looked up to the section designated
for supporters from Huntington. I grabbed Sam and pointed in that direction.
“Holy shit they came! I asked Brian to come but I didn't think he would never mind bring them
all,” she said looking up to see Brian, Matt, Val, Jimmy, Kaylie, Johnny and even Zacky was
“God, they stick out like sore thumbs in that crowd,” I laughed.
“Yeah, and they are going to be bored as fuck, we go on like second to last,” Sam said
as the announcer started to introduce the first team.
We kept looking up to our group of friends to see they weren't having that bad of a time. Every
time a stunt group fell or someone clearly messed up they would all point and laugh. Finally, it was
our turn on the mat. I looked up at Zacky as I stepped onto the mat, he was staring at me intently.
As, I walked over to where Amy and Ally were already set up what happened between Zacky and I kept
replaying in my head. I felt terrible as I reached them and grabbed ahold of their shoulders. At
that point I barely knew where I was never mind what I was supposed to be doing.
I don't know how I did it but I managed to get through the entire routine without making a mistake.
I also don't even really remember doing it. I just know it was the longest three minutes of my life.
Once we got off the mat, I ran out of the gym and down an empty hallway. I didn't know what was
wrong with me. Seeing them both at the same time was killing me. I didn't know what to do. I just
sat against the wall of the hallway in this unfamiliar school.
I was surprised that no one had come to get me, but I was also glad. I needed this time away from
people. When I heard the judges talking about announcing the winners soon is when I decided to head
back towards the gym. At this point, all the teams had gathered on the mat in team circles instead
in the rows of chairs we previously sat in. I walked over to my team and noticed an empty spot in
the circle in between Sam and Ashley. I sat down and linked my arms with them, as if I had been
there the entire time.
Sam leaned over and whispered, “you okay,?” I just nodded in response.
I just sat there with my head down, like the rest of the team, convinced it would be another year
we would place as one of the bottom teams. Which is why it was a total shock when we heard,
“In 2nd place, advancing to regionals...Huntington Beach Oilers,” the entire team stood
up screaming, while the three captains went to accept the trophy.
After the last team was announced we were able to interact with the crowd that came to see us. We
saw our friends walking towards us, Brian in front. Sam and I ran together and hugged him at the
same time. I looked over his shoulder just in time to see Amy running into Zacky's arms and I
immediately let go of my brother and went to thank everyone else for coming to see us. I didn't
bother with Zacky, though.
“Guys,” Brian said looking over to his friends, “we should take them out to
dinner to celebrate.” They agreed and Brian looked over to where Zacky was and yelled,
“Zack, you in?”
“Only if Amy can come too,” he said walking over with his arm around her. I glared at
Brian but he didn't get the hint.
“Yeah, why not,” I could have punched him.
“We have to take the bus back with the team but we'll meet you back at the school,” Sam
gave Brian a quick kiss on the lips and then dragged me to where our team had gathered, waiting to
Thank you to everyone who reviews it means a lot to me. i hope you all like this chapter =)
