No Place To Hide
The next morning I didn't leave my room until I absolutely had to. Not like it made much difference
anyway since Brian drove to school everyday. I walked downstairs to see him just walking out the
door. I followed him and as we reached the car he looked up and smiled at me.
“I can walk,” I told him as I started walking down the driveway.
“Ryleigh, calm down, get in the car,” I sighed and turned around. I threw my bags in
the backseat and got in the front seat next to him. He just looked over at me, not even starting the
“What?” I snapped at him, crossing my arms.
“You look nice today,” he commented. I gave him a weird look and then looked down at
myself. It was Friday, there was a football game tonight. Every Friday the cheerleaders had to dress
alike. Today we were wearing our uniforms. They were black with an orange and white `HB' on our
tops, plain white shoes we had to keep spotless, and there was a white and orange ribbon tied around
“What?” I asked again. I don't think I could be more confused.
“I figured you could use a compliment. I know you've been upset lately,” he looked at
me like he was genuinely concerned.
“How do you know?” I asked softly, lowering my arms.
“I know you better than you think, Ryleigh. And the walls are not soundproof,” I met
his gaze but quickly looked down. I didn't know what to say. He continued, “And if it's about
Zacky and Amy, I understand. I'm kinda upset about that too.”
“You are?” I asked looking back up at him.
“Yeah, not the biggest fan of her, they're weird together and he's different with her, I
don't like it. As for you being into Zacky, I don't care,” I was surprised at this news, but
also very excited.
“Seriously?” I was honestly surprised he didn't say anything else about my liking
“Yeah, I'd be a hypocrite if I was against it,” he said as he finally started the car.
“I'm kinda into one of your friends,” he admitted as he turned to look out the back
window as he backed out of the driveway.
“What?! Seriously? Who?” I was shocked and totally not expecting that.
“Sam,” he said keeping his eyes focused on the road.
He laughed nervously and responded with, “yeah.”
We pulled into the parking lot soon after that, pulling into his usual spot between Matt and Zacky
who were already there. I got out of the car before Brian even turned it off and grabbed my bags out
of the backseat. As I turned around, Zacky picked that exact moment to get out of his car. He
paused, looked me up and down and smiled before saying, “hey Ryleigh.”
“Hi, Zacky,” I returned as I pushed past him and headed across the parking lot towards
the gym. Sam was in the locker room putting her bag away when I got there. I smiled when I saw her,
wanting to tell her about my brother but I knew I probably shouldn't.
“I hate having to wear this fucking thing in school,” she said slamming her locker.
“Like I don't mind it in general but why in school? It shouldn't even be allowed our skirts
are just way too short, it's inappropriate.” I laughed and nodded my head, agreeing with her.
We stayed in the locker room until the first bell rang. The first thing we saw as we entered the
main hallways of the school was Zacky and Amy, officially back together.
Sam pulled me into a hug before walking, “It'll be okay, I'll see you later,” before
she took a left down the math hall toward her first class.
The only thing that really happened during the day was I actually noticed Brian flirting with Sam
during history. I never usually saw Zacky unless I went with Kaylie during break and I only ever saw
Amy at practices.
We got time after school on Friday's when it was a home game to go home for a little bit and just
had to be back at the school by five to warm up and have a quick practice before the game at seven.
Tonight I just went back to Sam's house instead of my own. We were up in her room talking when I
couldn't hold it in anymore.
“Sam?” I said looking at her upside down from lying on her bed.
“Yes?” she asked looking over from her computer.
“I have something to tell you but I don't think I should,” I told her rolling over so I
was looking at her right side up.
“Well now you have to,” she said fully spinning her body around in her computer chair
to face me.
“Yeah, I know. But if I do don't say anything or make it weird okay?” I asked resting
my head on my hands.
“Okay sure...” she didn't sound so sure.
“My brother likes you,” I blurted out.
She looked at me kinda like she didn't know if I was serious or not. “For real?” she
“Yeah, he told me this morning after he told me it didn't bother him I liked Zacky,” I
told her as I swung my legs around to sit up on the edge of her bed.
“Oh, see so he knows now? That wasn't so bad was it?” she said, turning back around to
look at her computer. “Oh, crap we gotta get back to the school,” she said turning back
around in the chair and standing up grabbing her bag.
When we pulled back into the school parking lot I noticed that Brian and Zacky's cars were still in
the parking lot. There was no reason for either of them to still be here. Unless they left with one
of the other guys and are just going to come back later. That must be it.
Sam and I walked in to the gym to see about half of our team already there, standing around the
freshly painted banner for tonight's game. Our coach hadn't gotten there yet, so various members of
the team were off talking to other people in the gym or doing whatever else. Game nights were also
more laid back than normal practice nights. I had wandered over to see how the banner had come out
tonight. It didn't take Sam long to grab my arm and pull me away from everyone else.
“I'm sorry to do this but I have to,” I was about to ask her what she was talking about
when she turned me around and pointed to the far side of the gym. there was Zacky and Brian playing
basketball with three girls from our team hanging out with them.
“Whatever, there's nothing I can do about it. It makes no sense but I can't really say
anything about it because we don't make sense,” I told her motioning to our uniforms during
the last part.
“Are you going to be okay?” she asked as she crossed her arms.
“I've been dealing with it for a long time now,” I said walking to the edge of the gym
and sitting down against the wall. She sat down next to me and I rested my head on her shoulder and
“So how did Brian let you know he knew about Zacky?” Sam asked trying to look at me,
which was difficult for her because my head was still on her shoulder.
I lifted my head off her shoulder and said, “he was standing outside my door when I went to
take a shower and he mentioned it then but I just avoided him. Then this morning in the car he told
me it was fine and that he actually does not like Zacky and Amy together.”
“Really?” she asked looking surprised.
“Yeah, apparently he's different when he's with her and Bri doesn't like it,” I said
smiling at her.
Then my coach arrived and called us together to tell about upcoming competitions and things. It was
hard but I managed to not look in the direction where Brian and Zacky were. Though, I did notice Amy
was the last one to join the group. Once she was done telling us about our competition next week and
the new shirts we were going to get she had us line up to go over our half time routine and then our
competition routine a few times.
This chapter is kind of a filler, the next one will be more exciting I promise! But let me know what
you think so far! And thank you to everyone who has reviewed the previous chapters =)
