The Haunted House
By Jeremy Dupre

The Haunted House

As I walked down that lonely, old, dirt road I thought that I was ready. I had been trying to for
years but I just could not work up the nerve to face that haunted house. I had just came back from a
vacation, and I wanted to try again after the many times that I had failed. I didn't know that there
was nothing to prepare me for going into a place as terrible as the one I was going to go into
today.

I continued to pace down the road. As I walked my knees buckled, and I shivered, but it was not from
the cold. I spotted the house. As I approached the house it took all the will power I possessed not
to turn around and run back. I walked up the concrete steps that led to the porch. I thought about
what might be waiting for me on the other side of the door. It gave me goose bumps just thinking
about it. After what seemed like ages I finally reached out a trembling hand to open the door, and
walked inside.

As I looked around the room my throat went dry. It was the most horrible thing I had ever seen.
There were hundreds of disgusting cobwebs all over the house. There was so much dust on the walls
and floors I could hardly tell what color the paint was. It had a musty smell, as if something was
decaying. The floor creaked, and made eerie noises as I walked. I watched as spiders scuttled over
my shoe, and a rat scurried into a hole inside the wall. I trembled all over, my teeth chattered and
I was drenched in cold sweat. I felt the color drain from my face.

Then I started up the stairs. They creaked, and groaned as I walked up. I heard a strange noise from
upstairs and wanted to turn back, but I shook myself. I wanted to be sure it was only my
imagination. The stairs seemed endless. It only took seconds to climb them, but the seconds felt
like they had been stretched into hours. Just as I reached the top, a flock of bats swooped down at
me. The startled me so much I fell backwards down the stairs. I could feel each step as I hit them.
I kept grasping the air trying to find something to grab to stop myself. Then I hit the ground with
a thud. I began to ache all over. I guess that's the punishment I get for not cleaning my house.
