BACKSTORY ON RAVEN ARIANA SNAPE
It was 1976 at Hogwarts, when a young Slytherin and a young Gryffindor could often be seen sneaking
up to the Astronomy Tower or down to the dungeons in the late hours of the night.Often the two would
remain together until just before dawn and sneak down to breakfast, acting as if they had gotten up
early to go to the library or some other trivial thing.
Lily Evans was a Gryffindor, fifth year, having just kicked ass on her OWLs when the one she loved,
the one who she had shared so many wonderful nights with, called her something that she never
thought she'd hear from his mouth, him being a half-blood himself. Tears filled her eyes as she ran
away from the courtyard and straight to her dorm. The next day, another young Gryffindor, famous for
his skill on the Quidditch Pitch and his troublemaking off of it, came to her with words of comfort.
He held her tight when no one else seemed troubled to do so. Their eyes met and they believed it was
Over the summer, Lily noticed something peculiar happening with her body. She was beginning to gain
weight, but it seemed to only show in her abdomen. She was constantly plagued by nausea and
moodiness, like she was in a permanent state of PMS or something. She decided that the next time she
went into London, she would pay a visit to St. Mungo's Hospital. She hoped they could tell her what
She returned home with tears in her eyes. She wasn't ill at all. She was with child. It would have
been wonderful news, had she only been pregnant two months, then it would have been James' child.
But alas, she had been pregnant for three months, she was pregnant with the child of Severus Tobias
Snape. She wanted to keep her child and she started getting out her old baby things.
She wrote James when she found out, but she left out whose child it was. She wanted to tell him that
When she returned to Hogwarts for her sixth year, she avoided Severus. He was already desperate
enough with her, this news would only make it worse. She went straight to James and kissed him,
lovingly. He was grinning as he kissed her. He lay a hand gently on her slightly swollen abdomen.
"Girl or boy?" he asked.
"Not telling," she whispered back.
As the spring semester began, Lily's due date came closer and closer. It started in Potions. She
started getting cramps. She had felt those a lot lately, so she just ignored them. She did not yet
know that these were not cramps....
After an hour or so of labour for Lily and an hour or so of pacing for James, the cries of a baby
girl were heard throughout the hospital wing... the cries of Raven Ariana... Snape. That's what was
on her birth certificate. Lily held her baby girl. She had bright green eyes and jet black hair that
could easily be James', if one didn't know. James took the child he believed was his. He gave the
child to Madam Pomfrey and knelt before Lily. "Lily... will you be mine forever?" He pulled out a
black box with a diamond ring in it and slid it onto her left ring finger....
For the rest of her schooling, Lily carried her baby girl almost everywhere with her. All of her
friends loved little Raven, even stone face Remus broke into a smile at the sight of the little
child. Raven's first steps were the most precious moment. Her first words were at James.
"Daddy," she said softly as he held her.
The last day before they left Hogwarts for good, Lily was feeling the nausea again. She sighed went
up to Madam Pomfrey and was greeted with the wonderful news. She was pregnant once more. This time
it was James'. SHe gave James the news once they were on the train. They were to be married in a few
weeks and this news made that even sweeter.
The day of their wedding was one of joy and happiness, only matched by the happiness felt the day
they had their son, Harry James Potter. Raven was nearly two now and was able to walk and still
learning to talk. She walked to her mother's side and looked at her baby brother.
"Hawy..." she said softly.
"That's right baby girl," James said picking her up. "Harry's your baby brother." He spun her around
and she giggled.
Lily watched the two and sighed. She placed Harry in his crib and made her way to the bedroom. She
sat at the desk and began to write a letter:
I know that I have not spoken to you in over three years, but I believe it's time you knew. You
have a daughter by me. Raven isn't James' child, she's yours. I thought you should know that she is
being loved and cared for as though she is James' own child. I am sorry I didn't tell you sooner.
"So you lied to me all these years, Lily?" came James' hurt voice from behind.
Lily turned. "Oh James... you just... you seemed to love her so much, I didn't want that to
change...." she said teary eyed.
James narrowed his eyes. "I don't want that filth's spawn around my son any longer.... Get rid of
"But James I-"
"... or I will...."
She nodded, beginning to cry. She picked up Raven and wrapped her in a blanket. "Come on baby girl."
she said gently. Lily apparated away, her daughter in her arms. She brought her to a small orphanage
in a small northern industrial town. She left a letter to her daughter explaining everything and
picture of her and Severus. She left the orphanage crying.
A year passed and there was great celebration in the magical world....
In 1989 a new batch of first years had just been sorted into their houses. One among the new
Slytherins was a dark haired little orphan girl, with bright green eyes.
During her first year at Hogwarts she thrived under, especially in the areas of Potions and Defense
Against the Dark Arts. One evening, she found herself going to her potions master with questions on
her homeowork. The letter her mother left her and the photograph, which she always kept with her,
fell from the pocket of her robes. She did not realize until she had walked half-way back to the
commonroom. She ran back and found her normally stoic potions master crying.
He looked up. "Raven.... is this yours?" he asked, holding out the letter and photograph.
She nodded and quickly took it back. "yessir.... erm...Wh-why are you crying?" she asked timidly.
He looked at her and half smiled. "Did you ever meet your father, Raven?"
She shook her head. "Always assumed he was dead, since I was put in an orphanage...."
He sighed. "He's not dead... Severus Snape is not dead at all."
She thought a moment then looked up at him with widened eyes.
From then on, they kept their relations quiet, she went by her mother's last name, Evans, as she
always had. She kept her photograph and letter close still.
Raven thrived as a student at Hogwarts, even moreso under the watchful eyes of her father....
