The Stakes are high
The Stakes Are High
by Aisling O'Hagan
Jessica, Liz, Jordan, Jodie, Francesca and Sarah to name a few. A list of names that have either
dated or been linked to Kian Egan. And to contradict 'Sesame Street', one of these things is
exactly like the other!
'I don't understand why Kian tells people he doesn't have a particular type of girl' Shane laughed
to the others. Mark nodded in agreement 'It's always the same. Tall, blonde, beautiful, famous.
He totally has a type'. The two lads looked over at Bryan and Nicky to see if they had anything to
say on the matter and noticed that Bryan had a sly grin on his face.
'What are you thinking?' Mark asked inquisitively. 'What if....' Bryan began. 'What if we put a
little challenge to Kian to test the theory?'. Nicky looked confused 'How'd we do that?' Shane,
Mark and Nicky drew closer to Bryan, hanging on to his every word as he explained his thought.
The lads broke into sudden fits of laughter as Kian entered the room. 'Fellas! What's happening?'
he was curious what they were laughing at. Nicky was chosen as the spokesperson, so as he cleared
his throat, he placed his hand on Kian's shoulder and directed him to sit down.
'Ki, we have a proposition for ya' he said 'ok, maybe it's more like a bet'. Kian hadn't a clue
what his mate was on about 'what do you mean?'. Nicky continued, while Shane, Mark and Bryan
giggled like little girls behind him. 'We don't think you can make a girl fall in love with you in
less than a month and we want to make a bet to see if you can prove us wrong'.
Kian laughed in disgust 'Ha, are you kidding me? I'm up for that'. 'But...' Bryan added 'there's a
catch'. Kian's smile suddenly faded 'what's that then?'. 'The girl has to meet the following
conditions. She cannot be blonde, modelesque in looks, tall, she cannot be a celebrity, she has to
be intelligent enough to potentially figure out what you're doing AND...wait for it' Bryan joked
'she cannot have any clue who Westlife or you are'. 'Ok now that's a little more difficult' Kian
admitted 'but I'll still take the bet. You're on! And what do I get if I win?' 'We'll all pitch in
and buy you that new Porsche Carrera GT you were looking at the other day'.
Kian's smile returned and stretched even further across his face. 'Oh, now you're definitely on.
You guys better get your wallets out' he told them confidently. The ?400,000 Porsche Carrera GT was
Kian's dream car. He'd just bought a Porsche, but it was nothing compared to the Carerra. He was
practically salivating at the thought of owning one. All he had to do was find some young,
unsuspecting girl and make her fall in love with him in 4 weeks or less.
The lads had given Kian a few days to scope out some potential 'victims', but would not allow him to
approach the chosen one until the first day of the test. He knew he couldn't look in places like
Sligo or the surrounding areas, because practically everyone knew who Westlife were. He decided to
take his chance on Dublin. 'There's lots of foreign girls living there. I'm sure there's bound to
be one or two that don't know who I am' he tried to convince himself.
Kian wanted to make sure he picked a girl that was pretty, although he had to avoid the supermodel
types; he was looking for ordinary pretty. After some unsuccessful attempts at University College
and Trinity College, he decided to take a jaunt down the road from Trinity to the 'Tri D Cafe' and
grab a coffee. He'd already been recognized by a ton of people on the college campuses, what could
another few fans hurt.
The server handed his take-away coffee to him and as he turned to exit, a young woman at one of the
computers in the corner caught his eye. She was sipping on a large cup of coffee, while frantically
attempting to type at the same time. She looked frazzled, her hair tied up on a loose ponytail, the
left strap of her tank top slipping off her shoulder.
'BINGO' Kian thought to himself 'she's it'. He knew it sounded so awful for him to be thinking
about her like that, as his 'victim', but he reminded himself what the fellas promised if he
The computer next to the young woman was vacant, so Kian took a seat. She briefly glanced over at
him to see who her neighbour was but then immediately turned back to what she was working on. Kian
tried to flash a smile before she turned away, but she was too quick.
As he logged in to check his email, he looked at her again. It appeared as though she too was
sending email as she was typing a lot. 'You have a lot to say' he said to her. 'What?' she
replied, looking at him and then back at the screen 'Oh ya' she laughed 'it's an essay I'm writing
for a class'. 'Which class?' Kian inquired, happy he'd gotten her attention. 'Psychology. I don't
think I've ever written so many papers in my life'.
Kian, realizing this girl had no clue who he was, or if she did, she was hiding it very well, asked
'Who do you have for psychology?' She answered 'Ms. Murney. She's tough, but I like her'. 'Small
world. I had Ms. Murney last semester' Kian told her, lying through his teeth. He knew well he'd
never even attended college, let alone had Ms. Murney for psychology.
The two talked for a few more minutes, before she excused herself to go to the bathroom. When she
re-appeared, she had noticed that Kian was gone, but there was a note on her keyboard. 'Thanks for
the chat. Sorry, had to leave. Maybe I'll see you here again sometime. Kian'. She thought that
was very strange for someone she didn't know to leave a note like that, but she found it very
intriguing and didn't mind that she may run into him again.
Kian walked into Bryan's living room with a smile a mile wide. 'What's
that for?' Mark requested. 'I've found her' was Kian's smug reply. It
caught Shane's attention 'Ooh, do tell'.
Kian described the girl to a tee - shoulder length light brown hair, blue eyes, about 5 ft 2,
glasses, slim build (but not modelesque), naturally pretty, not a lot of make-up, student at Trinity
College majoring in psychology and she had not given any indication that she knew of Westlife. She
wasn't Irish, she was Canadian, a country where Westlife have not attempted a break and were not
well known at all. 'She's perfect' he proclaimed.
'And her name?' Nicky inquired. 'Ashley'. 'Uh Ki, there's a slight
problem though, don't ya think?' Shane said 'as a psychology major, she's
probably very good at reading people. That's not going to work to your advantage'. Kian thought
about it for a second and replied 'makes it more interesting then doesn't it mate'.
He went on to explain that Ashley was under the impression that he was also a student at Trinity,
having taking the same psychology class she was taking now. He didn't think he needed to actually
been seen by her a lot on campus, as he was a year ahead of her supposedly, but as long as he ran
into her every now and then, it would seem as if he was who he said he was. The lads agreed that
Kian had it all worked out. 'I tell ya fellas, I'm gonna get the car'.
The following day, Kian ran into Ashley as he walked by the college. 'Hey' he called to her. She
turned and smiled 'Hi there. How are you?'. 'Grand. Just heading to Tri D to grab a coffee before
my next class' Kian told her, knowing full well he had no class to attend. 'Me too, can I walk with
you?' Kian obliged.
Over the next few weeks, the two saw each other every second day or so. Kian even attempted to fake
helping Ashley with her studies for Ms. Murney's class. Often though, their late-night study
sessions would turn into late-night make-out sessions.
Shane, Bryan, Nicky and Mark were concerned that Kian would start to get wrapped up in Ashley and
somehow let it slip that she was part of a bet. But he assured them that she meant nothing to him,
that the intimacy between them was part of the act. It was all about the Porsche.
With only a few days to go before the deadline of the bet, Kian sat in the Tri D coffee shop, at
their usual table waiting for Ashley. He played around on the computer and checked his email as he
waited. 'INBOX - 1 new message' he read, as he clicked 'read mail'.
It was from Ashley. She was apologizing because she would not be able to make their date that
night, she had a huge paper due the next day and needed to stay at the library and work on it. She
also added a personal note at the bottom of the email that read 'these past few weeks have been
absolutely incredible. I never knew that being with someone could feel this good. Kian, I think
I'm falling in love with you'.
Kian's heart began to race a mile a minute. He'd done it. He'd made her fall in love with him.
His mates were gonna have to eat their words and buy him the car. 'Brilliant' he said to himself as
he pressed 'print' to bring the email back to his mates as proof.
'Nope, we want to hear her say it' Bryan told Kian after reading the email from Ashley. Shane spoke
up 'that's good enough for me, I'll give my portion for car, but I still would like to hear her say
it'. Nicky and Mark agreed with Shane. The plan was for Kian to make a date with Ashley at the
coffee shop, their usual table. The other lads would sit a few tables away so they could hear the
conversation and Kian had to get Ashley to say she was falling in love with him.
Kian rang Ashley on her mobile the next day to make the date. He didn't mention anything about the
email, but she was so glad that he had called because she thought she might have scared him off by
telling him how she felt. And his voice didn't give any indication that he was going to break it
off with her. She was very excited about how things were going.
The lads arrived at the coffee shop about 15 minutes before Kian was to meet Ashley. That gave them
time to sort out the logistics of who was sitting where and what they would do once she said the
words they needed to hear for the bet to be completed. The cue for Kian to all of a sudden lose
interest in her would be when the four lads left the coffee shop. The scene was set. High-fives
all around and Kian took his seat.
A few minutes later, Ashley walked in, a smile on her face, but not looking as cheerful as she
usually did. Immediately Kian asked her what was wrong, before she even had time to sit down. She
shrugged it off as having a bad day at school and that she had lots of studying to do. 'No big
deal' she added, kissing him on the cheek.
As she sipped on her coffee, Ashley was about to say something to Kian when he spoke first. He
wanted to say something to encourage her to admit her feelings out loud. 'Thanks for your email the
other day. It was a bit of a surprise, but definitely a good one'. He was confused by Ashley's
response because she didn't really react to what he'd said. 'I really care about you Ashley and I'd
like to see where we can go next'. It was hard for Kian to say, knowing that as soon as his mates
heard her say she loved him, that would be it, but it was part of the game.
Ashley placed her coffee cup, half empty, in front of her, tilted her head to the side and smiled at
Kian. 'Really?' she asked him 'you wanna see where we can go next?' Kian smiled back at her 'Ya'.
'Well that's a laugh' she blasted, her smile suddenly turning to a scowl 'You bastard'. Kian was
shocked. 'Pardon me?' he questioned. 'You stupid son of a bitch. You played me'.
Shane, Nicky, Mark and Bryan sat quietly at the other table listening to Ashley yell at their mate,
knowing that at this point it was probably better to leave them alone. Nicky softly said 'Shit, I
think she knows'.
'What are you talking about?' Kian calmly asked Ashley 'what do you
mean I played you?' She explained her train of thought. 'I was just a
game to you. A bloody bet. And don't deny it, I heard you. I heard you and your four friends over
there' she told him, firing a look that
could kill over to the other table.
How did she know? Kian couldn't figure it out. He'd never slipped up. How did she know? 'I came
here early' she continued 'to study. I was coming out of the bathroom when I heard your voice and
you mentioned my name. Your mates were congratulating you on winning the bet, on making me fall for
you. I wanted to see how much further you would take it, so I snuck out the back door and came
around to the front as if I'd never been here'. She had tears streaming down her face as she spoke;
she could barely look at him she was so angry. But she was more angry at herself for not seeing
'Well I hope you had fun, I hope whatever your prize is, it was worth
it', her last words as she grabbed her bag, violently pushed her chair
backwards, causing it to tip and raced out of the shop. Kian wanted to run after her, but he
couldn't. She would never listen anyway and what would his excuse be. He had no excuse. He was a
bastard, just like she'd said. Immediately, the others made their way over to Kian to see if he was
ok. 'Ya, ya. I'm fine' he told them, still in shock. 'Well mate. Your new car will cheer you up'
Shane reminded him.
** Fast Forward 3 weeks **
Racing down the streets in his new Porsche Carerra GT, Kian could feel the power of such a machine.
But at what price had it come. He really hurt Ashley and even though it had been 3 weeks since he
seen her last, her words rang over and over in his head. He took a left turn and drove past the Tri
D coffee shop. As he drove, he glanced in the window to see Ashley sitting at their usual table,
hammering away at the keyboard. He continued on, but wondered 'was it really worth it?'
He made his way to Luigi Malones where he was meeting the other lads for a few drinks. He sat down
next to Shane and handed each his mates an envelope. Nicky was the first to open his. 'What the
hell is this?' he said floored by what was in the envelope. '?100,000. What are you doing Ki?'
'I've returned the car' he told them, causing their jaws to drop. 'You've gotta be kidding me.
That car was what you wanted' Bryan reminded him, looking down at his portion of the ?400,000 car
'You know Bry, it was everything I wanted. But after what I did to Ashley and seeing how much I
hurt her, I've discovered that all I ever REALLY wanted was someone to love and for them to love me
back. She loved me and I loved a car'. His friends sat in silence as they listened to Kian open
his heart 'And you know what else I discovered lads? There is a type of girl I go for. She was it
and I blew it. God, I'm such a bastard'.
As he spoke, Kian realized what he had to do. No matter what, he would have to apologize to Ashley.
He may have lost her love, but hopefully he could get her forgiveness. He pushed his seat back,
said goodnight to his friends and began his walk down the street to the Tri D coffee shop, hoping
their usual table would still be taken.
