Paper Cranes
By HaleyHarlequin

Today at the Ash Springs nut bin, all the good little boys and girls were going to go outside and `just relax in the sun'. Ryan didn't much care as long as he could bring his notebook and have everyone leave him the fuck alone. He didn't much like interacting with a lot of the people here, save his roommate.

He did sort of wonder about the girl though. Would she be here? Would she remember him? He tried to chill out. His life was already screwed up enough without a love interest, none the less one with the same problem he had. Then again, she would understand him a little better…as he sat in the cool lush grass, opening up his notebook, he tried to shake these strange thoughts from his head. She was just a girl, another patient, nothing special. And as he tried to convince himself of this, he began to wonder why she hurt herself. It made him sad and a small frown was forming on his face.

Just then, he felt a tap on his left shoulder, and looked up to see the girl above him, smiling nervously. She was blocking the sunlight, and a halo of gold surrounded her beautiful form. She looked like an angel, someone to be worshiped. `My scarred angel.' He thought to himself, smiling sadly and a bit confused at his choice of words. He then realized she looked like she was becoming uncomfortable and that he was being incredibly rude not saying anything. He sputtered. “Uhm, hi.” He gave her an awkward, crooked smile, trying to keep composure. “Wanna sit?”

The girl, Juliette was her name, gracefully sat down beside him, and said “Hi.” A small guarded smile on her face. “What are you writing about?” it was phrased as an easy non-personal question like, `How's the weather?' but the look in her eyes told him that she meant it on a deeper level, like she knew what he was writing about, and it took him aback. That and the fact that she made him incredibly intrigued resulted in a strange reply from Ryan. He felt like he could trust her, and besides, his little hobby certainly wasn't a secret anymore. So he said, without hesitation

“I used to just write about it, how it felt, trying to make sense of the urge, kind of pleading my case against myself in a poetic way. Sometimes they're lyrics. But now that I don't have it anymore, I just write about wanting it, needing it, and not having my best friend here to help me get through the bad days, or my dad here to beat the shit out of me.” His eyes widened. “Wow, I've never told anyone that before. I'm sorry, I just-“she cut him off, giving him a reassuring look. “It's okay. I understand. I kind of did the same thing, only I composed music.” She blushed, putting her head down, looking away from him. “I know it sounds stupid. I had a piano. And I would just sit at it for days at a time, and compose these songs. It was like they told all my secrets, in a coded message. And it was my way of letting people know what was going on, or at least that's what Mrs. Latrixxe says.” She bitterly laughed. “When my mother was drunk, she'd tell me I'd be famous for it someday. And then the next morning, she'd tell me to `shut the fuck up' because my noise was giving her a headache. But I got a lot of time to play, because mostly I was there alone. It was the only substantial thing in my life.”

She faced him again. They just looked at each other, sadness in their eyes. Ryan said “It's not stupid.” and brought his hand up to touch her check. She slightly flinched, but did not move away. And they sat like that for a good ten minutes, just touching and understanding each other. It wasn't much, but it was all they had. And it was all they needed.

Yup. I updated, and I don't think it was as bad as the last one. Review please!(:

OH. And. MeltYourHeadaches, I have no Idea if you're reading this, or if it'll even mean something to you. BUT. I just now read your review from a few weeks ago, and I wasn't going to continue, but your review inspired me.

So THANK YOU!

I dedicate this chapter (and quite possibly the rest of the story) to you m'dear.(:

Love,

Haley.
