Because he is human,
and I am a dog

By Kayan

I don't really remember how long I've known him. Maybe for 5 years now, maybe a little longer. We're really different from each other, that's the thing everyone will notice even before they really met us. Because he is human, and I am a dog. He walks on two legs, I walk on four.
He's different from his family, my family. They talk to me like everyone would do to a dog, he talks to me like a friend would do. They cared about me because they had to, he cared about me because he loved me. He loved me like I was his best friends. And although I could never tell him that he was my best friend, I think we kind of were.
There were many times I wished I could speak his language, to answer his questions. To tell him what I thought about the situations he was in, but I couldn't. I wasn't able to. Even though I understood everything he said, I wasn't able to. So I thought about a way to show him what I felt. I found a way. I just jumped into his lap when he was sad, licked his face to show him that I was there for him. And I learned that he liked it that way.

On just a random day he looked me in the eyes and said: “I'm not gonna stay home today. I'm sorry, I know you want me to play with you. But some dude asked me to hang out, And I kind of said yes. Don't be mad at me, little friend.” His eyes looked sad. I licked his face.
Because why would I be mad at him for making new friends? I just wanted him to be happy. Just like he wanted me to be happy.

When he came back the sadness in his eyes was all disappeared. I almost begged him - with my eyes - to tell me what had just happened. And he smiled. He always understood me, just like I understood him. He hugged me for a long time. I licked his face, again.
“Today I met someone.” He said “Today I fell in love.”
I didn't understand it that day, but I think that didn't really matter.

--

“Hunter! Do you have a sec? I want you to know someone, someone really important.” Brendon smiled, standing next to a boy I hadn't ever seen. Brendon looked at the boy, waiting for him to make a move in my direction. “Ryan!.. introduce yourself to my friend, my dog.” And Ryan laughed.

He kneeled down to me, looking at me happily. “Hello, Hunter. My name is Ryan.”

And all I wanted to ask him was “Are you the boy my friend fell in love with?”

Ryan didn't answer.

Brendon nodded.

--

Ryan became my friend, too. I really liked him, although he kind of happened to steal my best friend from me. I knew it was not really their fault, but still. I still wanted time with my Brendon, my friend.

Ryan was nice to me. He talked to me like Brendon did, he treated me like a friend, not like just some dog no one cared about. And I was glad he did, `cause the last thing I wanted was Brendon ending up with someone I didn't like.

--

I was alone more often. Ryan and Brendon spent more time at Ryan's place. I started to miss them.

“Hunter, come to me! Sit Down!” His mom said, wanting me to listen. I missed Brendon. So much.

--

“Hunter, I'm sorry for leaving you alone. But I'm here now.” Brendon said, without his Ryan, with tears in his eyes. “I fell in love, so badly. And he doesn't even notice. I'm afraid he will get mad at me when I tell him. Maybe he doesn't love guys at all. Maybe he will think I'm disgusting. I really don't know anymore.”

How could he be so stupid? I licked his ear.

“Hunter!” he laughed. “Thank you hunter. I love you.”

I kept licking his ear.

“you're right, buddy. I must tell him.”

--

“Hey, Hunter.” Ryan said. “Brendon wanted to see you. So now we're here.” He smiled, looking at Brendon, who was nervously standing behind him. “ He's not really acting like himself today.” He whispered.

“I heard that.”

“I wanted you to.” Ryan laughed “What's on your mind.”

“I don't know. I think I am.. I just.. I don't know. Err, nevermi..-“

And Ryan cut him off with the finger he placed on his lips. “I love you.”

For a moment there was an awkward silence between them. Brendon didn't know what to say, and Ryan was just waiting for him to answer. And I got frustrated, decided to bite Brendon's leg softly.

“I love you, too.”

Brendon definitely still needed me, I Laughed to myself.
