The Way I Danced With You
By Meghan Raine

The Way I Danced With You

A burning sensation built up in his chest as Zacky downed another shot of whiskey. He couldn't help indulging himself with alcohol tonight. It was the only thing in the world that would take away some of his pain. The past few days have changed so much in his life, possibly ruining everything he had coming for him. All because of that one girl that made his mind spin and his body electrify with love and lust. Sure, Zacky had been with girls before; damn good ones too. Yet, there was something about this one in particular that just made him feel...different. This girl completely brought out another side of Zacky that he didn't even know that well. One that would go behind his best friends' back for his selfish needs. One that would risk getting kicked out of his band for some hot girl. Zacky didn't like this side of him, but it was too late. The beast had already been awakened by the harlot.

I'm never gonna dance again,

Guilty feet have got no rhythm.

Zacky thought back to the night ago that caused his inner demons to awaken. Ironically enough it was at the same bar he was in tonight, but at that time it was lit up by hot girls, loud music, booze, and dancing. He was sitting in the same spot at the bar, enjoying a nice cold beer as he watched people dancing on the floor. Zacky wasn't looking for anyone in particular that night, but when he saw her enter through the screen door he just couldn't take his eyes off of her. They had already met previously, giving each other the occasional greeting when they were at the same place, but they never formally met. She caught his gaze and he saw the small smile forming from the corner of her mouth. She had a really nice smile and a face that was young and healthy. Her light brown hair was let down that night, probably an attempt to cover some of the skin she was exposing. He never really saw her in anything other than a t-shirt, but tonight she was wearing a black tank top with a bleeding rose design and a pair of faded jeans. Zacky remembered all the details of her body that night, even the way her hips moved as she walked towards him. Before he knew it himself, she had taken a seat right next to him. They didn't speak at first, but Zacky felt the awkwardness slip into the situation. It wasn't every day you caught your best friend's girl alone at a bar after all. When the bartender came by she ordered a beer for herself. He was surprised at this, since he never saw her drinking before with the guys. She always seemed a bit wary towards alcohol. Then, she turned to him, taking the initiative to start up a conversation.

“I didn't expect a rock star like you to be here.” She spoke, her eyes looking at him, a smile forming slightly on her lips once more.

He couldn't help but smile back at her. God, she looked so gorgeous when she smiled. “Yeah, well I come here to think sometimes. Nobody here recognizes me.”

She nodded understandingly. “I see. I do the same thing, but then again I don't have to worry about fans attacking me everywhere I go.” She took a long sip of her beer when the bartender placed it on the table. She licked her lips after she swallowed and spoke again. “So, how's the new record coming along?”

Zacky merely shrugged as he held his beer with his right hand. “It's coming along. Well, we are stuck in a creative slump at the moment. But we'll get past it once we get inspired.” He knew that this was pathetic small talk and wanted to say something else, but then he caught himself staring into her eyes. They captivated him the most just by how they tended to change color, slightly, by her emotions. He could easily read her eyes too and thought he saw a glint of sadness in them. He was about to ask her what was wrong, but she quickly responded to his prior statement.

“Yeah, Johnny was talking to me about it a while ago,” She hesitated in her speech, as if she wanted to say something, and decided to add, “We got into a fight”

Zacky had already suspected something like that and said compassionately, “Oh, sorry about that, Meg…” He lifted his beer to take a drink, to give his mind time to process something better to say than just “sorry”. He set the glass down and said, “But, I'm sure Johnny will apologize. He's not one to let a good thing walk away.”

“Hm.” She took another sip of her beer before speaking. “And you're saying that I'm a good “thing”?”

He blinked, flustered. “Umm, I meant a good catch-er, a good girl that any guy would want to be with…” He sighed, giving up on explaining any further, knowing that the train-wreck had already crashed and burst into flames. He felt like such an idiot and knew that he was getting nervous for no reason. She's was Johnny's girlfriend for God's sake! In yet, he found himself drawn to her like a fly and a bug-zapper.

He glanced up at her again and saw the smirk on her face. “Right, Zacky. That's what I thought you meant.” She finished off the beer and placed the empty glass on the counter. “Whatever, screw Johnny. I came here to forget about him for a while…and I want to get to know you better.”

Zacky smiled at her and bought her another beer. They talked for what seemed like hours, just trying to get their minds off of everything and everyone around them. The music blasted through the bar all night long and soon the crowd dwindled to a few. The only people left on the floor were couples, swaying to a softer, more romantic music. Zacky was still talking to Meghan, though, and it was only now that he noticed how long they've spent talking. He had gotten to know the girl so well, and knew that he was falling for her fast and hard. Suddenly feeling the music pulse through him like a drug, he took her hand gently, almost hesitantly, into his. No words were spoken between the two; the long gaze into each other's eyes was strong enough to hold their connection. He was slightly unsure of whether or not to do it, but his feet had a mind of its own as Zacky stood and slowly led them to the dance floor. He placed his free arm around her waist as she put hers around his neck, and they danced. Their movements were slow, the music forcing them into a trance. Zacky wasn't even fully aware of the fact that they were so close or that their hands had separated so that he could fully hold onto her waist and she could hold onto his neck. It was purely blissful and he just wanted to dance with her for as long as time allowed.

As the song faded away, he felt Meghan pull herself away from Zacky. Gaze still in tact, she gave him an apologetic look before whispering, “I need to go...” She walked away from him and out the door. Zacky's heart was tugging to her, wanting to catch her before it was too late, but something in his mind was telling him that it already was.

Sighing, Zacky gathered himself and decided to retire for the night. He headed outside and took in a sharp breath. He asked himself if he really was trying to seduce one of his best friend's girlfriend into his arms. Sure, he thought Meghan was absolutely perfect for him, but she wasn't his for the taking. She belonged to Johnny and he had to keep his eyes and hands off of her. Letting out another huge sigh of remorse, Zacky walked up to his car and unlocked the door. Just as he was about to pull on the handle, he felt a tug on his shirt's sleeve. Turning around he saw the girl that was haunting his mind all throughout the night, slight tears in her eyes. He didn't know what to say or why she was standing there when clearly she knew he was trying to come onto her. But none of his questions mattered though as she pressed her lips against his. Her lips were warm and moist and Zacky felt compelled to kiss her back. Once again his arms were held securely on her waist, hers now resting on his shoulders. Zacky felt himself melting into the desire he had been lusting for all night and before he knew it he had Meghan in his car and he was speeding off to his house…

Though it's easy to pretend,

I know you're not a fool.

It didn't sink in the first day after that night for Zacky to realize how much of a bastard he was. He was too busy absorbing the afterglow of what happened between him and Meghan to consider what the hell he had gotten himself into. He risked destroying everything he had with his band, his career, and his friendship just to have the girlfriend of Johnny Christ. He knew what he did was wrong and knew that if Johnny found out he would be in deep shit. What made matters worse is that he didn't know how Meghan felt about this. He was more concern about himself before that he didn't even realize how much she would be affected by this. Then again, he had an idea when he learned that Meghan had snuck away from him after their love making and left. Making matters worse was that he learned that she had also broken up with Johnny the day after they had sex.

“She just…left.” Johnny told Zacky, as well as the rest of the band when they were in the studio. He was clearly despondent and slightly in a drunken state. “We got into a fight a few days ago, but that was nothing. I thought it would just blow over…but then she comes to me crying saying that I deserve better and that she was leaving me.” He sighed as he put his head in his hands. “I don't know what set her off like this, but I can't help but feel like I'm at fault. If I didn't act out…if I didn't get so anger with her…maybe…she wouldn't have…”

Zacky swallowed hard. Seeing Johnny like this was just too much for him to handle and he was surprised that he managed to keep his cool like this. He watched as Matt, Syn, and Jimmy gave him some encouraging words and then tried to come up with some lame advice for him. “I'm really sorry, Johnny. It'll pass, she's just one girl.” Yeah, one amazing girl that just lured him into a scandalous one-night stand.

Johnny looked up at him, but Zacky couldn't meet his eyes; there was too much shame in his own. “Thanks guys. I swear, without you I wouldn't be holding up so well right now.”

“That's what best friends are for, Johnny. We're always here for you man, all of us.” Matt said to him, the words adding more guilt onto Zacky's shoulders.

I should have known better than to cheat a friend,

And waste the chance that I'd been given.

That night Zacky drove around aimlessly, trying to clear his mind of what he had done. He knew that everything was his fault, but he had to keep it all inside. There was no way in hell he could tell Johnny this, or anyone for that matter. He would just have to live with the guilt and let it pass. As he tried to let his mind drift off elsewhere, his eyes caught the gas meter leaning towards empty. He swore to himself before pulling into the closest gas station he could find. He got out of his car and filled up the tank, letting his eyes drift as he did, trying to find a distraction.

That was when his eyes caught hers again. At first he had no idea what he would do, but he knew he had to confront her. It may be the last time he could ever get some weight off of his chest. Fear was prevalent in her eyes as she tried to make a dash back to her car, but he caught up with her in an instant and grabbed her shoulder, spinning her around. Fortunately there weren't many people around and it was rather late out.

“Zacky let me go!” Meghan said forcefully, trying to get away from his grasp, but there was no way in hell he'd let her go again.

“So you're leaving town because you can't deal with your own actions?” His words were harsher than he meant to be, but he couldn't help himself. “Meghan, listen. What happened between us…nobody has to know about it.”

“But I will and you will!” She protested. “It was bound to happen anyway!”

“What, you sleeping with me?” He asked her in a sarcastic voice, but was actually serious.

“No! I meant me leaving him because one way or another I end up screwing up every relationship I have.” She said, her voice breaking slightly with sorrow and regret. Zacky's eyes soften, realizing how hurt she was. God, if only he didn't act so selfish before.

“That's not true-”

“Yes it is, Zacky! You don't know anything about me!” She tried to pull away again, but he grabbed her arm and stared her down.

“Yes I do! I know that you're a good person, and what happened between us wasn't your fault.” He tried to convince her as hard as he could. He didn't want to lose her, and he didn't want her to suffer because of this. “Look, go back to Johnny, tell him you had a change of heart and-”

“I'm not going back to Johnny! I've already betrayed him, and he deserves better than me.” Meghan said lowly as she looked down. Zacky frowned at this, knowing that he really screwed up. But then a new thought came into his mind.

He lifted his face gently with the tip of his finger. His finger traced up to her cheek and then cupped it with the palm of his hand, making her shiver with the touch. “Then let me come with you.” She blinked when he said those words and couldn't help but stare at him like he had grown three heads. “I'm serious, Meghan. We can run off together and start a new life.” He let the silence drift over him as the words sunk in.

“Are you drunk?” Meghan asked him after the small pause in his speech. “First you're telling me to go back to Johnny, and then you're trying to convince me to be with you! What the hell is wrong with you?”

“Meghan, listen to me! I know we just met, but I feel so strongly pulled towards you.” Zacky's voice got louder as he spoke to her. “I-I just…I can't let you go! I have to have you in my life one way or another. I don't care about anything else, I just want you.”

Zacky's hold on Meghan weakened and she pulled her arm roughly away from him. Finally out of his grip, she turned her back to him. “What you're saying is crazy! Zacky, you have a life here, a family, and a little band called Avenged Sevenfold! You're not giving all that up just to run off with a girl you had a fling with!”

“Meghan, don't leave!” Zacky begged as he tried to grab her again. He just couldn't help himself. He was so spellbound by her that all he wanted was to be with her again. She was refusing him, though, and glared at him with such rage he was afraid she'd hurt him.

“You don't love me, Zacky Vengeance. Even if you did love me, I don't. What happened between us meant absolutely nothing to me. I'm not the girl you're looking for and you're damn well better off without me.” She held the handle on her car door tightly and her head was staring down at the gravel they stood on. Her voice was so serious it made Zacky feel a strong pang in his gut. “I didn't tell Johnny what happened and if you're smart you won't either. At least do that much to save your own ass and just…” She pressed her lips together for a second to phrase the words the best she could. “Just live your life how you would without ever meeting me and pray you'll never see me again.”

Zacky felt his heart fall out from his chest as he watched Meghan get back in her car, shut the door, and start the engine. He never imagined that he would fall in love with a girl so quickly, just to have his world torn and shattered twice as fast. He watched with depressing eyes as she pulled out of the parking space. The car slowed and pulled up right next to him so the driver's window was facing him. The window then rolled down and Meghan turned to him. He felt his heart jump slightly with hope, but it all faded away when she looked at him with icy eyes.

“Good-bye Zacky. Forget about me.”

Those words were harsh, blunt, and cold, making Zacky shiver with horror that the girl of his dreams had just driven away. It almost made him want to laugh at how moronic the entire thing was. Now all three of them were feeling the pain caused by the aftermath of one stupid mistake Zacky made. He wondered if he could ever face himself in the mirror again after this. He wondered if he could ever look at Johnny straight in the eye again. He wondered what will become of Meghan and if they would ever see each other again. But all he knew right at that moment was that he would never let himself live this down…

“Hey!” Zacky lifted his head, the voice of the bartender disturbing his thoughts. “I said do you want another shot?”

Deciding he was too depressed to even talk, he gave a small nod. His mind drifted off into his realm of questions again as he thought about his last run-in with Meghan. Had he really tried to convince Meghan to run-off with him? Was he that ready to leave everything behind for that girl? Did he really think she would go along with it too? The answers were all yes and it just concluded that Zacky Vengeance was the biggest dumbass in the world and the worst friend in history. But as he said to Johnny, it'll pass because she was just one girl. One girl out of a million…

The bartender handed Zacky the shot of whiskey and once again he downed it, this time ordering a double straight afterward. He needed booze to drown out his thoughts; it was the only thing that would. He didn't fall back into his daydreams, not wanting to face his conscious right at the moment. Instead he decided to take notice in the girl next to him. She wasn't like Meghan at all; brown hair, hazel eyes, and a rather lively face. She looked at him and gave him a full smile.

“You come here often?” She asked in a high-pitched voice.

“Not so much…” He answered, but even through the rejection in his voice she still tried to talk it up with him and even get him out on the dance floor.

“Come on, just one dance!” She persuaded, taking his arm. “Dancing will help take away all your stress and-”

“I'd rather not.” He declined with a rather rough shake to his arm to get her hand off of it. She pouted at him and walked off, just moving on to the next guy her eyes laid upon. Zacky rolled his eyes and sighed slightly, wishing that it was just as easy to move on to the next girl, but it wouldn't be. He saw the girl with a new guy, dancing out on the floor to the hype of the music. He thought about the slow dance he and Meghan shared, the painful memory striking at his heart once more. He realized that he would probably never dance again after the way he did with her. It wasn't worth recalling all the guilt, and after all, who would dance with him now?

He took his shot glass and drank it up before ordering another one, having no intention of reminiscing anymore.

So I'm never gonna dance again,

The way I danced with you.
