Mirror Images
By Darchangel

Not real, song not mine, lawyers get off the phone!
//////////
Shane picked the brush off the bathroom counter and forced it through his mop of hair. It'd been one
of those bad hair days all week.
'Of all the days to be awful...oh, just get decent!' He'd be going over to Kyle's place soon. They
had to talk.
Kyle...

^Look at me
You may think you see
Who I really am
But you'll never know me^

His smile reflected in the mirror as he thought about Kyle. It'd been two beautiful months...since
they first kissed, first made love...beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
But every beautiful act had been done in secret, and part of that worried Shane. None of the other
guys had a clue what was going on...and neither the two had the courage to say anything. The blonde
man felt like he'd been walking around for the past two months with DIRTY ROTTEN LIAR tattooed on
his head in neon ink.
How long could they keep it up?

^Every day, is as if I play a part
Now I see
If I wear a mask
I can fool the world
But I cannot fool
My heart^

Shane.
Gay.
Kyle.
Gay.
Shane and Kyle.
In love with each other.
There was no other way to put it.

^Who is it that I see
Staring straight back at me?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?^

Shane sighed. How would the others react? Accept whole-heartedly, be a little squeamish but still
cool, or kick them out? He shuddered at the last option.
Another cold wave flashed through him. Would Kyle accept the idea of telling them?
Shane put a hand to the mirror, touching his reflection. The dark-blonde shag haircut Kyle loved to
comb his fingers through...the shiny blue eyes Kyle loved to gaze into...the soft lips Kyle loved to
kiss...
But would that all change if he didn't want to tell the others?

^I am now
In a world where I have to
Hide my heart
And what I believe in^

He didn't think he could stop loving Kyle if he refused to come out...that was ridiculous. But a
part of him would feel...so lonely, so betrayed, so...he couldn't find words for his other feelings,
but he knew they were there.

^But somehow
I will show the world
What's inside my heart
And be loved for who I am^

Shane flicked on the cold water and brought a handful of the shimmery liquid to his face. He could
see a dim reflection of himself in the water. It looked so odd, so alien.

^Who is it that I see
Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection
Someone I don't know?^

He finished washing his face and turned off the tap. He looked up in the mirror and bared his teeth.
Yep, clean. Shane ran his fingers through his hair once more. Decent enough.

^Must I pretend that I'm
Someone else for all time?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?^

One way or another, this was going to be it. Shane was going to talk with Kyle, and a decision was
going to be made.
He felt something odd in the corner of one eye and brushed it away. He wasn't going to cry. Not
today.
Why would he have to?

^There's a heart that must
Be free to fly
That burns with a need
To know the reason why^

Shane walked out of the bathroom and flicked off the light. He made his way down the stairs as
slowly as possible to psyche himself up, grabbed his keys off the counter, and headed out the door.
Slowly he got into the front seat of his car, and with a shaky hand, adjusted the mirror. He could
see nervousness reflecting in his eyes.

^Why must we all conceal
What we think
How we feel
Must there be a secret me
I'm forced to hide?^

He took a deep breath. 'Okay, man, there's nothing to be afraid of. You're going over to Kyle's,
you're going to ask him a simple question...you're going to be just fine.'
Then why did he feel like he was going to throw up?
He shook his head and stuck the keys in the ignition.

^I won't pretend that I'm
Someone else
For all time
When will my reflections show
Who I am inside?^
