It's not that the cafeteria's unhygienic, it's just that... it looks nasty and the food sucks so
this wasn't the greatest date I've ever been on. The floors were speckled grey linoleum and the
walls were a puke green color. Part of me wonders if that was the original color they painted it or
if people didn't make it to the trash can in time and hurled all over the walls.
We went into the long line leading up to the steel counter where the old women in hairnets were
serving some sort of food. I wasn't really sure what it was but it looked sloppy and was a strange
orangey color. I was definitely not eating it but I'll get some anyway.
We got our food and a milk and sat down at an empty table down at the end of the large room in the
I played absentmindedly with my food.
"So... what exactly do you think this is?" Daisy asked giggling.
I laughed, "I have no idea but it looks nasty. I cant wait to get out of here."
"I know right. I don't like hospitals. Here, have my number so we can call each other when we get
out of here." She wrote her phone number on a napkin with a pen she stole from the table next to us.
The owner didn't even notice she'd taken it. Daisy was gunna be great when we go out on a candy
"Thanks." I said and wrote my number on a napkin, too. Then returned it to the table it came from
and gave the napkin to her.
We talked for what seemed like an hour or so but what was really a few hours. It was five o'clock
when we realized how long we'd been there, still playing with the nasty gunk that was on our
"Want me to walk you back to the front desk?" I asked smiling.
She giggled, "that would be wonderful, thank you."
We held hands and walked towards the front desk.
"Ewww, my mom's there. Do you mind if we go back to your room for a bit?"
So we walked to my room and sat on the bed holding hands.
A few minutes passed by filled with an awkward silence. Then I looked at her. She looked at me. We
both leaned in. She turned her head slightly to the right and closed her eyes. I closed mine too and
turned my head slightly to the left. We leaned our heads in more and banged noses.
Smooth. I thought. Now she's gunna think I'm some sort of retard who doesn't know what he's doing.
But she just laughed, "Sorry, I guess I haven't done this in a while."
I laughed too, "me either."
Another awkward silence.
I looked at her again. Her beautiful blue eyes were rimmed with black eyeliner which made them look
even bluer. She was looking out the window, thinking about something but I couldn't tell what.
I put my free hand on her chin and tilted it gently towards my face. I leaned in and pressed my
lips to hers gently then pulled away after what seemed like forever but was actually only a few
She smiled and we looked into each others eyes for a long time.
Then a nurse knocked on the door and we quickly let go of each other's hand and looked in opposite
"Hello kids," the nurse said as she walked into the room. Then she stared at us quizzically and
shook her head as if to erase what she thought was going on between us from the Etch-a-Sketch in her
brain. "What have you been up to?"
"Uhh... nothing much," I replied hesitantly.
"Yeah, I was just leaving actually. Bye Ollie," Daisy said as she turned and left to go to the
Finally I'm out of that place. I hate it in there so much. I'm glad Daisy was there to keep me sane
I walked slowly into the school with my heavy backpack on my back and Ryan with his arm around
Audrey's waist behind me.
I went to my locker before I could witness Ryan and Audrey kissing goodbye as they parted ways to
their own lockers. I shuddered at the thought.
Ryan's locker was right next to mine luckily and the one next to it was just a spare. I grabbed my
books for first period Science, shut the door, locked it, and turned to face Ryan who was staring at
the double doors at the entrance of the school. I tried to follow his gaze but I couldn't see
whatever had mesmerized him.
"Ryan? You ok?" I asked.
"Who is that?" he replied and pointed to a very tall girl in skinny jeans and a black Panic! At the
Disco tee. She had red and blonde hair and big blue eyes surrounded by black eye liner. It was
Why is she here? I wondered. I thought she didn't live around here or even go to this school!
She must've seen me because she quickened her pace and got to my locker sooner than I thought.
"Hey Ollie!" she said with way more enthusiasm than I thought possible.
"Hey Daisy. What are you doing here? Not that I don't want you here it's just that I didn't think
you lived near here." why am I so stupid?
"I decided to move in with my dad. He lives here and his house is way better than my mom's crappy
little shack she calls a home."
"Cool," I said.
"Can one of you guys show me where the main office is? Oh and hi Ryan. I think that's your name if
I remember you correctly."
"Hey," Ryan said. He actually blushed for once when he realized that he'd just thought his best
friend's girlfriend was hot and was about to tell him that.
"I'll show you," I offered her and took her hand in mine.
We walked to the main office at the front of the building next to the nurses office. I really don't
understand the point to the nurse because all our school can afford is crackers. Last year, Audrey
broke her finger so she went to the nurse and asked her to check it out so the nurse just said
"Here, have a cracker" and shooed her back to class.
I took her to the main office and then apologized because I had to get to class before Mrs. Kernan
got mad at me for being late again. I quickly walked to class to see that not everyone was there
I took my seat next to Audrey and she glared at me.
"What?" I asked.
"You know what."
"No... I'm pretty sure I don't."
"Your stupid little girlfriend transferred schools just to be with you that's what."
"So, pretty soon you won't care about me and Ryan anymore. It's just gunna be all about that giant
"Shut up Audrey. I'm beginning to think that you're jealous."
"Me? Jealous of that?" she said, pointing to the door as Daisy slowly walked in nervously. She
quietly walked to Mrs. Kernan's desk and gave her a small red piece of paper. A late note.
Mrs. Kernan smiled at her and pointed to the empty desk in front of me. I blushed as she nervously
walked back to the desk assigned to her and smiled a sweet smile at me.
Audrey laughed at me. Stupid blushing. It made Daisy smile more which made me blush more which made
Audrey laugh harder until finally Mrs. Kernan yelled at her.
Oh God. Today's gunna be horrible. I thought to myself.
