Are you sure dude? It's getting pretty dark out there, looks like a bad storm..."
Ron said cautiously.
"But look how good the surf is!" Noodles pouted
'the waves are nice..' Ron thought
"I have a bad feeling about this" Greg frowned "Don't go"
"I'll be fine" he said pulling his wetsuit up halfway "I'm super Noodles"
"You're not so super without your glasses, man" Dexter warned
It was true, without his glasses he could hardly see...but still, the surf was excellent today, even
if it did look like rain. "I'm going" he said and bended down to wax his board. Outside it thundered
and lighting flashed. Ron and Greg backed away from the window.
"Noodles," Greg protested "It's not safe.."
"Oh, nothing is 'safe' Greg" Noodles scoffed zipping up his wetsuit.
"Dude...If you die..." Ron started
"I know, I know. You get my skateboard" he laughed
"Come on. Don't go" Dexter said putting a hand on Noodles' shoulder. "We can stay in and get drunk"
Noodles paused and looked to be in deep thought. "Hmm....That is tempting. But nope, not today." he
grinned and secured his board strap around his ankle and tucked his board under his arm. "You guys
can keep an eye on me, okay?" he opened the door and stepped out into the warm sand. The guys seemed
satisfied and let him go. "Later!" he called and set his glasses on a table as he left.
"Later!" the replied
"Be careful!" Greg yelled
"Yes mother!" Noodles laughed and stepped into the water.
Ron, Greg and Dexter took a seat in the chairs on the porch. Noodles waded into the surf and looked
cautiously at the almost black sky. "You can do this. You'll be fine" he reassured himself. He
paddled around, waiting on a wave. Waves came and Noodles rode them perfectly. Some of the best he'd
ever ridden he thought happily. It thundered loudly in the distance and startled him. He fell off
his board. They guys laughed at him from the porch. Noodles spit out water and climbed back on. The
wind picked up and he saw a very large wave building. "Hell yeah, I'm riding this baby" He grinned
and paddled towards it.
"He's going for it" Dexter said pulling out a pack of cards.
"Rad. I should have went with him" Ron frowned and got his cards from Dexter. Greg din't want to
play and stared at Noodles. Noodles rode it nicely and happily awaited for another wave. Soon enough
he got his wish and one about twice as big as the one he'd just ridden was building in the distance.
He gulped, but something inside of him told him to go for it. He paddled slowly towards it.
Greg leaned forward while Ron and Dexter hit each other and laughed. They were playing "slap jack"
Noodles stood up on his board. He couldn't do it, the wave was too big. He had to bail. He looked to
his left and right quickly, no use, he didn't have his glasses on. If he tried to ride it through it
would kill him. If he jumped he could/would/most likely, live. In a split second he made his
decision. Noodles bailed.
Greg stood up and watched
Noodles put his hands up and braced as his body hit the icy water. It was colder than he thought and
he opened his eyes just enough to see the nasty looking rocks he was about to hit. He screamed even
though he wouldn't be heard and crashed head on into the rocks. He felt a sharp sting and then it
felt warm around his face. He pushed backward in the water and saw that it had a darker color where
he had been instead of the normal clear. 'shit, blood' he thought and then realized that he needed
"Holy shit" Greg said and walked forward
"What?" Dex and Ron asked
"He fell off his board"
"So? He'll get up"
"He fell into the rocks."
Ron and Dexter ran up by Greg, the water lapping at their feet.
"Do you see him?"
His lunges burned, but finally he reached the surface 'Air, sweet oxygen' he thought and breathed in
deeply. His head ached a thousand times worse than his worst hangovers, and his face and arms felt
scratched. 'help' he thought and then he yelled and waved his arms about. A wave crashed over him
and he spit out water. The salt water stung his head and burned his cuts.
"There he is!" Ron yelled and pointed to the figure waving and yelling.
"Is he okay?" Dexter asked
"I think he needs help" Greg said.
"Naw, he's probably messing," Ron scoffed. "Right..?
"I don't know"
They peered closer.
Noodles felt weak and struggled to stay afloat. Another wave crashed over him, sending him under. He
fought his way back up and waved his arm weakly.
"I'm going" Greg said pulling off his shirt
"Dude! He's faking"
"HE IS NOT!" He yelled and pointed. They saw the wave knock him under and then him come up and wave
his arm weakly. Greg ran into the water.
Noodles felt heavy and started to sink. He kicked and moved, but he was too cold and too weak.
"Guys...please" he whispered and gulped in air. He tried kicking hard, but his leg barely moved. He
whimpered and a tear rolled down his cheek. "Help...someone..anyone" he gasped.
Greg breathed hard and swam towards Noodles
Noodles closed his eyes and gave way to the current that was pulling him under.
"KEVIN!" Greg shrieked as Noodles slipped beneath the surface.
'someone call me?' he thought groggily 'I should have stayed in and drank' His body hit the
"He went under! Dex call those 911 people!" Ron yelled. He pulled off his shirt and ran into the
water. Dexter ran back into the condo and picked up his cell phone.
Greg dove down and groped around blindly. He came up for air and saw Ron in the distance. He looked
down into the water. 'Shit, this'll hurt' He dove down and opened his eyes. The salt immediately
caused him pain but he looked around and felt for Noodles. He saw a dark blur in the near distance
and figured it to be Noodles. He swam back up and rubbed his eyes fiercely. "Owww" he moaned.
Ron swam up to him. "What?" he asked
"Yeah, It'll do that." he laughed. "You find him?"
"I saw something big and dark a few feet over"
"Kay" Ron swam over and dove down. He groped the sand and then he felt something hard 'nope, rocks'
he thought and moved his hands over. 'Smooth, warm, um...' he moved his hands up 'wetsuit, arm,
hair, Noodles!' He swam back up. "Found him!" he yelled at Greg. Greg blinked, wide eyed and swam
over to him, his eyes severely blood shot. "He's down at the bottom" Ron said. Greg nodded. "Here"
Ron said thrusting his hand into Greg's. Greg took it and they dived down. Ron placed Greg's hand on
Noodles' shoulder. Greg pulled Noodles up a bit and got a good hold under his arms. He started to
the surface and Ron helped him push Noodles up. They got to the surface and pulled him back to the
shore. Dexter was waiting and you could hear sirens in the distance. Ron and Greg laid him down on
the sand and breathed hard. Dexter ran over and checked for breath. "He's not breathing" he
"Fuck" Ron panted.
"CPR?" Greg suggested squinting. His eyes still burned.
"Yeah" Dex said and started pushing on Noodles' chest. Greg kneeled down and held Noodles' nose
close and breathed into his mouth.
The life guards and the ambulance came about 5 minutes later. Dexter and Greg were still working.
The medics ran over and moved Greg and Dex back as they check for a pulse. "None" one of them said.
They continued CPR and used an air thing instead of breathing directly into his mouth. Two guys
brought over a stretcher board. They turned Noodles to his side, slid it under him and then turned
him back over onto it. They continued CPR as they took him over to the ambulance. Ron, Greg and
Dexter piled in too.
They put him on a stretched with wheels and rushed him into the hospital, the guys following after.
The nurses and doctors crowded around as they rushed him down the hall towards the emergency room.
Greg gripped his hand "Come on Kevin, come back man" he pleaded.
A nurse pushed him aside, as they pushed him into the emergency room. "Sir, you can't come back
here" she said.
"But-" he protested
"No!" She pulled the curtains so he couldn't see in the windows.
Dexter and Ron pulled him slowly to the waiting room. "I told you I had a bad feeling about today"
"He's too young to die..." Dexter said, looking towards the doors.
They paced and stared at the closed doors. A few minutes later a doctor came walking out slowly.
They looked up at him expressionless. "I'm sorry," he said. "He didn't make it. I'm sorry" he looked
Greg fell to his knees and sobbed into his hands.
Ron punched the wall, cursing and slammed into it hard. He rested his head in his arms and cried.
Dexter cursed and pushed over the water cooler and kicked and hit the wall a few times "It's Not
Fair!" he shouted. He sunk to the floor and laid his head against his knees.
Dexter sat at his desk a few days later, his journal in front of him. He read the lyrics over again
and picked up his pen. He titled the song "Gone Away
