Officer Down
By crypticjedi

Delko was only a few steps away from finding Wolfe in that trailer that day. I was in the back of
the vehicle and on training. I'm not sure if I was prepared for what came after hearing the "Officer
down," come from the intercom. It happened so fast and what I would see would not be easy to
swallow.

Delko reappeared seconds later with Wolfe and I could swear for a second that he was bleeding from
his face. Then I realized that he was and that he had a very large nail sticking out of his eye.
"Simpson!" Delko yelled at me. I blinked back into reality when I heard my last name. Delko was
helping Wolfe into the passenger seat and within seconds, he was screaming. "I have to get it out!"
he screamed while trying to grab his head. "Grab his hands, Simpson! Keep him from touching it!"

When the vehichle lurched into motion I wasn't sure if I should handcuff Ryan or grab his hands. I
leaned forward between the two and looked closer at the damage. Ryan seemed to be going into shock.
"Don't go into shock, Wolfe!" Delko screamed. "Keep him awake, Simpson! Keep him awake!"

I had no time to react. Ryan glanced at me, his one good eye almost pleading for me to take the nail
out. "Wolfe, you've got to stay awake and not touch the wound ok! Give me your hands!" I said to
him. He wasn't listening to me, he was panicked. He went to grab his head again but I grabbed hold
of his wrists. "Ryan, look at me," I said lower and close to his ear. "Look at me...we're almost at
the hospital. You have to stay with me, ok?" He started to sink low into the seat when I spoke to
him. "Shit! Delko, he's going into shock!"

Just as I yelled we reached the ER and Ryan was being taken out.

Moments later, Alexx had shown up and gone in to be with Ryan. Horatio came and spoke to Delko. I
just stayed outside. I had not been prepared for what I might see from my own collegues. I was so
ready to see crime scenes but, this was nothing that I was prepared for.

By the time it was all over, Delko approached me outside. "You ok?" he asked. I jumped at his voice.
"I'm fine...just..." she looked down at her hands which previously had blood. "It's not easy seeing
a partner hurt. I know how it feels, we recently lost someone." he said with a hand on my shoulder.
"But, you did good Simpson. You did good for a rookie." I smiled and watched as he turned to go
inside.

I was lost in my thoughts again when I heard two men walk up behind me. Delko went to get his car
while Ryan stood beside me. I glanced up at him but I was afraid to actually look at him. "It's not
that bad is it?" he asked. I glanced up again and turned to face him. "Wow, you look a lot better
than you looked a while ago." I said with a chuckle. He smiled and began to chuckle himself.
"Listen, thanks for not letting go of my hands on the way here. I would have dug that nail deeper or
pulled it out myself if it weren't for you."

I shook my head. "Nah, it was all Eric," I said finally referring to my superior by first name.
"Crazy driving and me with no seat belt. You owed it to me to be ok." I joked. I looked down again
not wanting to look at the eye. "Again, thank you." he said a little closer to my face. "Because of
you, I saw more than a nail." I looked up but I couldn't help but notice how close to me he had
gotten. A honking broke the silence.

"Ready to go, Ryan?" called Eric. "Yeah!" he replied still standing in front of me. "Want to come?"
he asked. I shook my head. "Alexx is taking me home." Ryan nodded again. "Ok. See you at work."

And with that, my first day with a CSI was done. Oddly enough, it was with one of the team hurt and
almost blinded but hey, I hear in Las Vegas, their CSI has it even harder.
