One Last Look
By Leigh_Ashworth

Matt and Zacky were sitting on the back porch of their secluded beach house. The sun setting slowly over the ocean, creating a reddish-orange glow in the skyas the married couple looked through a rather large photo album. Tears have welled up and slid down their cheeks as they looked through picture after picture of three young men, their friends. The memories of those fateful days fifteen years ago.

All three were broken and bruised from the impact of the crash.?Of the three, Johnny was the first to die. The doctors did all they could to keep him alive, but his broken ribs had punctured both his lungs, not to mention the glass that had flew into his?small frame, caused him to lose too much blood. Everyone was devastated that their? 'Little Buddy'? as Jimmy endearingly called, had died during surgery.

Two months later found them at the home of their tallest friend, whom was laying face down in a pool of his own blood and puke. The three knew he took Johnny's death worse than the rest. They looked around and noticed that Jimmy drank every single bottle of alcohol in his home, the last of it all rested in his hand by his side.??

It was around Thanksgiving when the last of three were leaving the cemetery after visiting and leaving fresh flowers for the two they had lost. It when they were heading back to the car that Brian had collapsed to his knees holding his chest. Immediately Matt and Zacky took him to the hospital, where they sat holding each other anxiously waiting to hear what was going on with Brian. Two hours later a doctor show up and with saddened eyes told them that he passed away. The doctor explained that Brian had been experiencing stress; and they knew what from, which had caused? him to have heart attack, of which?he did not recover from.

Matt and Zacky knew that the death of their two friends had caused Brian to have that heart attack. It hard to hear it but they knew that Brian wasn't the same after Johnny and Jimmy passed away.

They held each other close and as they left the hospital, Zacky's tears came faster as they reached their home. Sometimes they wished that the crash never happened, but both knew that they couldn't stop it. They didn't have to like it, b ut they somehow knew not to be angry with God for not taking their friends, no brothers from them

Closing the photo album Matt hugged Zacky close to him. "You know, I miss them."

Zacky smiled weakly, "I do too, but they're in a better place now." He looked out at the darkened sky, the moon half hidden by gray clouds.

"Come on its getting late and its been along day for the both of us." Matt said getting up and taking the photo album inside and setting it on the shelf in the living room. Zacky followed closing the door and locking it.

They walked hand in hand to their bedroom, both quietly getting ready for bed. Both went to their adjoining bathroom and open a drawer full of the medicine that they took; cause they had found out they had contracted AIDS. So they quietly took the meds and went to bed. They moved to the center of the bed and immediately clasped their arms around the other.?Matt sent a?silent prayer to his three deceased friends, Unknowingly Zacky did the same. After that sleep came quick.

Unknown to them their prayers were answered and by the next morning, their only adopted son would find them wrapped in each others arms peacefully cold and dead.
