ReBoot: Cycle of the Dragon
AndrAIa had been acting really strange lately. I didn't understand
it, I mean, she had been fine before the reboot of Mainframe. Now I
go into our room and she just sits there, reading something and
speaking in another language.
That was pretty much all that was on my mind when I walked into the
diner, ducking my head to avoid banging it against the doorframe. My
younger format, Enzo, was following me so I was trying my best to put
up with him.
I spotted AndrAIa in a booth with Ray, and I would've kicked him out
if I hadn't noticed Mouse was there. Andi, again, was reading the old
book that she had been fascinated with.
"What's up?" I asked, sitting down beside AndrAIa. She didn't even
look up. "Hey, are you awake?" I nudged her and she swatted my hand
away. At least I got a response outta her.
"Care for an energy shake, sugah?" Mouse asked. I shook my head.
"I'm fine." Mouse shrugged and sat back in the booth.
"Has she been doing this all the time that you two have been here?"
Ray nodded. "Aye, mate. What's that book about?"
"It's an old spellbook from the mage Raistlin." AndrAIa said
quietly. We all just stared blankly at her.
"Raistlin? Who's that?" I asked, putting my hand on her shoulder.
She shrugged it off. "A red-robed mage from ancient times. He was
one of the greatest, the most powerful, though nobody trusted him
except his twin brother, Caramon."
"Red-robe? Honey, Ah don't know 'bout you, but those reds kin turn
to black robes at any time." Mouse said.
AndrAIa still didn't make eye contact with us. After a moment she
said softly, "he did turn black. Fortunately, this was written when
he still wore red."
We were all silent for the next few nanos, Mouse and Ray sipping
their drinks and AndrAIa going back to reading her book. I sighed and
leaned back in my seat. Enzo would be returning shortly, so I would
have to enjoy my peace while it lasted.
Cecil came over to our table with the bill and Ray and Mouse fought
over it until Andi snatched it away from them, dug some units out of
her wallet and handed it back to the French waiter. I laughed quietly
and Ray stared at me. "What was that?!" the web surfer asked, stunned.
"What was what?"
"That noise you just made, was that a, a *laugh??*" Ray gasped.
Little Enzo looked at me, terrified, then ran out of the diner.
I rolled my eyes, um, eye. "Can it, Surfer." I growled.
AndrAIa laughed, the first time that I had heard her do that in a
while. "Easy Sparky. Come on. Betcha I can kick your ass in a game of
one-on-one, eh?" she said grinning. The game sprite then pulled me
out of the booth and out the door, suddenly full of energy.
We walked to Floating Point Park and played basketball for a while
and then sat on a bench, watching a group of young binomes play.
"What's with your sudden interest in magic?" I asked her.
She shrugged and looked away, her dark black eyes glittering
strangely. I sighed and began to relax when a familiar warning rang
*"Warning: Incoming Game. Warning: Incoming Game."
The game landed around us and I looked around. It was definitely
medieval, though I had never seen anything like it.
I heard Andi start cursing in languages that I didn't even know that
she knew. "What's wrong? I've never seen this game before." I said.
"It's called, 'Dragons of the Summer Flame'."
"Cool." I said, double-clicking my icon. "Reboot." I looked down at
myself. I was a knight with a symbol of a rose and a silver dragon on
my shield. "Hey! Andi! Where did ya go?" I called, looking around.
The game sprite warrior was nowhere to be found.
"Uh, Enzo? Turn around, but don't panic okay?" AndrAIa's soft voice
said from behind me.
I turned around slowly and came face to face with an enormous gold
dragon! "AndrAIa? Please say that's you." I whispered.
The gold nodded her head. "Yeah. It's okay. I'm used to this form,
though I haven't been in it for a while." She admitted.
"What do you mean?"
AndrAIa lowered her great scaled head. "I guess now's a good time as
any to tell you this. My name is Drey. I was hatched as a gold
dragon, but took on the form of a powerful female sprite named
'AndrAIa'. The real Andi was dark and ambitious. By taking over the
sprite, I hoped to change her. Unfortunately, I was wrong. She got
control and freed herself, making a copy of her body for me. Now
she's loose on the net. I'm sorry, Enzo."
I listened to her tale, yet I couldn't believe that the woman I
loved was a dragon, and the one that I thought she was, AndrAIa, was
an evil psychopath. And to top it all off, the User, sitting astride
a large green dragon, chose that time to attack.
"Enzo, quick! Get on my back. I'm assuming that you know how to use
that lance!" Drey bowed down and I climbed up into the saddle on the
base of her long, serpent-like neck. There was a long, twelve-foot
lance attached to it along with a shield shaped like a dragon's head.
"That's a dragonlance. You use it pretty much like a regular lance.
Hang on!" Drey said helpfully.
I was relieved to be back in my regular body and I had missed flying
more than evcr, but I knew that I could not be with Enzo anymore. My
friend, a bronze named Nightshade, had warned me about a sprite thing
called 'love', and I thought that it would never happen to me. Shows
you how much I know.
Matrix sat between my shoulder blades and aimed the dragonlance at
the oncoming green. I flapped my wings as hard as I could, trying to
gain speed, but the smaller dragon was faster. I managed to gain a
little altitude and called out to Matrix. "I'm gonna dive, aim for
the dragon with the lance. I'll finish off the User once he's off the
"Right." He yelled back.
I folded my wings back and dove. Just before hitting the green, I
pulled back and heard it give a strangled cry. Matrix's lance had
pierced its throat and it fell to the ground, lifeless.
Enzo got down off my back and put his hand on the green's
blood-covered neck. "It's dead." He announced.
I turned my attention to the Dark Knight and took a deep breath,
then released the flame, incinerating the User.
The game left, and I stayed as a dragon.
Okay, next chapter will be up shortly, so tell me what ya think!
