In Her Room
By dancexforxlife

He crept down the dimly lit hallway, careful not to wake anyone. He soon reached his destination and, ever so slowly, he pushed the door open, his eyes falling on the sleeping form. A small smile spread on his face as he watched her chest steadily rise with each breath. He loved her more than life itself.

He made his way over to her bed, gently lowering himself so he was sitting right next to her. He started to stroke her soft, brown hair and just taking in the moment of being with her. She stirred slightly at his touch, but continued to sleep soundly.

He loved how, just at the sight of her, he would smile. He loved how the small, simple things she does or say brighten up his whole day. He loved how her infectious laugh could make an entire room of gloomy mourners laugh along with her. He loved how when he would come home from work in a horrible mood, she'd crawl up into his lap and cuddle and, without saying a word or understanding why, calms and soothes him. He loved the small kisses and the warm hugs she gives him. He loves the look of pure joy and love that crosses her face whenever she sees him before she comes running over. She was his world and he wouldn't have it any other way.

“What are you going to do when she grows up and doesn't need her daddy anymore?” He turned around and found his wife leaning against the door, smiling.

“She's only four. I still have some time yet.” His wife came and sat behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist resting her head on his shoulder.

“You know you have to stop these nightly visits soon.”

“I know. It's just…” Unable to form the thought into words, they sat in silence, both staring at the little wonder sleeping next to them.

“It's late. Come back to bed soon.” His wife kissed his cheek and left for their bedroom. Sighing, he kissed his daughter's forehead and followed his wife out.

“I love you,” he whispered before he slowly pulled the door closed, committing the peaceful sight in his memory forever.
