“What?”

“We're engaged,” Gerard repeated for both of them.

“Really?” Lana asked.

“Yes, really,” Hannah said.

“Aren't you married?” Fiona said.

“In the process of getting a divorce,” Gerard said.

“You're crazy!” Maeve said.

“Not really,” Hannah said.

“Yes really!!” all the girls said.

“Why?” all the guys said.

“They can't get married!!” Maeve said.

“Why not?” Frank asked.

“Yeah, I mean, they're already shacking up,” Bob said.

“Ew, Bob, don't talk like that!” Fiona said.

“What? They are!” Bob said.

“You guys could say you're happy for us,” Gerard said.

“Course we are,” Mikey said.

“We are?” Maeve said.

“We are,” Frank said.

“Good,” Hannah said.

“New year, new start, guys! Time to reclaim my life,” Gerard said.

“Here's to that!” Bob said.

“You better treat my cousin right, Mr Way!” Maeve said.

“Don't worry, I will,” Gerard said.

Gerard had to go back to work before Hannah had to go back to school. He arrived back at the apartment one evening, looking angrier than Hannah had ever seen him.

“What's wrong?” she asked from the couch where she had been reading.

“Lorraine, that's what's fucking wrong!!” he snapped.

“There's no need to snap at me!!” she snapped back immediately.

“I know, I'm sorry. She's just got me so mad,” he said.

“What's she done? Is she putting up a fuss about the divorce papers again?” she asked.

“If only!!” Gerard said, ripping off his jacket and throwing it at the closet door.

“Will you please just tell me what's going on?!” Hannah said.

“You haven't read the paper, then,” he said.

“No, I haven't,” she said. He handed her today's paper, some tabloid that she never would have pegged Gerard for reading.

“My secretary brought that in this morning, along with a list of cancelled appointments,” he said.

She looked at the paper and scanned it for something that would make Gerard so angry. Then she saw it, a headline underneath the main story. `Jersey Shrink: Child Abuser'.

“Oh my god!!” she exclaimed upon reading the headline.

“Just keep reading, it only gets better from there,” he said sarcastically.

“New Jersey psychologist Gerard Way, 32, has been reported to the police by his wife, Lorraine Way, 32, for abusing their son Jason, 17. The couple are currently going through a divorce. Mr Way is living with his girlfriend, who Mrs Way claims is the cause of their divorce. She also claims that Jason was out with his friends on New Year's Eve when his father came out of a dark alley and attacked him. Jason managed to get away before any permanent damage could be done to him. More on this story and a statement from Lorraine Way on page four.”

Hannah couldn't read any more. She already felt sick to her stomach. “That conniving bitch,” she muttered.

“I really didn't think she would sink so low. This really is her one last act of revenge. They finally got her to sign the papers, you know. Lets just say I was lucky to get the lawyer I did. This would have gone on for months if he hadn't been so good,” he said.

“I can't believe this. And to think that people actually believe it!!” she said.

“Well Jason did show up with cuts all over his face,” he said.

“Most of which were from my fingernails! This is ridiculous,” she said.

“That's why we have to leave,” he said.

“What?” she asked.

“As soon as it's possible, we need to get out of here. I don't think I could bear running into her in a supermarket or something. My job is in jeopardy here, I've already lost so much work over this. People don't forget stuff like that easily, Hannah,” he said.

“Yeah, but…” she said.

“I need to do this, Hannah. I can't stay here,” he said.

“Then neither can I,” she said.

He took her hand and looked her in the eye. “Are you sure you're okay with this? I could hold it off, if you want to wait until the end of the school year,” he said.

“No, I want what you want, and you want us to leave now,” she said.

“Are you sure?” he asked.

“I've never been so sure of anything in my life.”

Hand in mine, into your icy blues

And then I'd say to you we could take to the highway
With this trunk of ammunition too
I'd end my days with you in a hail of bullets
