“What?”

“Will you marry me?” he repeated, no irritation in his voice at her complete lack of comprehension.

“You're crazy! You're still married you know. And I'm not even eighteen yet!!” she said.

“You'd swear that kind of stuff doesn't matter when you're sleeping with someone, but when he proposes, oh god!” he said, still smiling.

“That's different! Even if I were eighteen it would be illegal for me to marry you now!” she said.

“Well obviously we'd have to wait until it's legal but there's no harm making my intensions perfectly clear,” he said.

“You're totally serious, aren't you?” she said.

“Absolutely! I love you and I want to marry you,” he said.

She paused for a minute and looked out the window at the steady falling snow outside. Gerard watched her every tiny movement as he waited.

“Yes.”

“You'll marry me?” he said.

“Well don't look so surprised. I love you too,” she said.

Gerard grabbed her and kissed her.

“Woah, steady on, you usually do that after you put the ring on my finger. Close the deal kind of thing,” she said.

Gerard steadied himself, still smiling manically. He slipped the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. He kissed her again.

“You're glowing,” he said.

“Well I'm extremely happy!” she said.

“Me too,” he said.

“Are we going to tell people?” she asked.

“Well we can tell the guys and your friends. I kind of want to keep it between us for a little while though. Make it our little secret while we hide away from the world for the next few days. Frank's having a New Year's Eve party, we can tell them there,” he said.

“I'm so excited!” she said.

“It mightn't happen for a while. Lorraine couldn't be any less helpful if she tried. My lawyer will probably have to drag her hand across the papers to get her to sign. We have a pre-nup, only coz I demanded one, so that should help speed things along,” he said.

“I don't care how long it takes. I'll wait forever for you if I have to,” she said.

“You won't have to, I promise.”

They spent the week as hermits, stepping out only on the night of Frank's party. She hated it, but all the clothes she had with her screamed seventeen at the top of their textile lungs. She picked the most mature outfit she could find; a black skirt and top and her one and only pair of heels, worn twice.

“You look gorgeous,” Gerard said when she stepped out of the bedroom ready to go.

“I feel seventeen,” she said.

“Hey, hush up with that. You look amazing. Do I need to remind you that I love you?” he said.

“No, I know,” she said.

“Then relax. I'd love you if you were eighty-four, so I think I can deal with seventeen,” he said.

They arrived at Frank's house and went inside.

“Hey Gee, glad you could make it!” Frank said.

“How goes the divorce?” Bob asked.

“Slow,” Gerard said.

“Hannah, Maeve's been waiting for you. She's over there,” Mikey said, pointing in the general direction of the back yard. She smiled at the guys before leaving to talk to Maeve, Lana and Fiona.

They talked for a good while before Hannah realised her purse was missing. “Shit, I think I left it in the car. Be right back,” she said.

She made her way back out of the house and to Gerard's car. He had left the door unlocked so she got her purse from the car floor easily. She made a mental note to lecture him about car security later on. She shut the door behind her to find that she wasn't alone.

“Hello Hannah,” Jason said.

“Jason! What are you doing here?” she asked.

“I was just in the neighbourhood,” he said.

“I'd better go,” she said, trying to edge towards the house but he put his hand on her arm to stop her.

“You can't leave just yet. I need to speak with you,” he said, tightening his grip as he spoke.

“I really should be getting back,” she said, trying not to let the fear show in her voice.

He started to pull her away from the car, down the street. She fought and tried to pull away from him but he was a lot stronger than she was. She tried calling for help but there was no one around and the music from the party was too loud for anyone inside to hear anything.

“You might as well give up now. No one's coming to save you this time.”
