When You Say You
A Songfic for Panic! at the Disco to “When You Say You Love Me” by Josh Groban
The crowd started cheering as we finished “I Constantly Thank God for Esteban”. While
they cheered, I walked over to Ryan and whispered something in his ear. He nodded and went to tell
Spencer and Jon as I went back to the crowd.
“So, you've guys been great so far. I think San Diego has definitely been our most
enthusiastic audience so far on this tour.” Another roar erupted from the crowd. “Next,
I'm gonna sing a song by Josh Groban. Now, hopefully, I'll get it right, seeing as I don't normally
sing his songs and I'm dedicating it to my girlfriend, Katie, who has put up with me and the
guys, not only on this tour, but for the past two years.” I walked over to the piano and
started playing as silence filled the arena.
“Like the sound of silence calling, I hear your voice and suddenly I'm falling, lost in a
dream.” Some people in the crowd start whistling. “Like the echoes of our souls are
meeting, you say those words and my heart stops beating. I wonder what it means. What could it be
that comes over me? At times I can't move.” I looked out into the crowd for her, my heart
swelling ten sizes when I find her standing there, staring back at me, and singing the words. She
was absolutely in love with Josh Groban. “At times I can hardly breathe.”
“When you say you love me, the world goes still, so still inside and,” I continued to
sing, a smile growing on my lips when she realized that I was staring at her. I kept eye contact
with her for a while longer before going back to the piano. “when you say you love me, for a
moment, there's no one else alive.” A small laugh escaped my lips when I saw the crowd swaying
to the music.
“You're the one I always thought of. I don't know how, but I feel sheltered in your love.
You're where I belong. And when you're with me and I close my eyes, there are times I swear I feel
like I can Fly!” the crowd started cheering again. I had my eyes closed so I couldn't see, but
I knew that Katie was cheering the loudest and the hardest. “For a moment in time! Somewhere
between the Heavens and Earth, and frozen in time, when you say those words.”
“When you say you love me, the world goes still, so still inside and when you say you love me,
for a moment, there's no one else alive!” I was so into the song that the only thing that
existed was me, the music, and Katie. Nothing else mattered, nothing else was important. Everything
else revolved around us at the moment.
“And this journey that we're on, how far we've come and I celebrate every moment. And when you
say you love me, that's all you have to say. I'll always feel this way.” I glanced at her
again and saw she had tears flowing down her cheeks and a huge smile plastered on her face. God, she
was beautiful and perfect in everyway. I started getting nervous as the song came closer to ending,
knowing what was going to happen afterwards.
“When you say you love me, the world goes still, so still inside and, when you say you love
me, in that moment I know why I'm Alive! When you say you love me.”
“When you say you love me, do you know how I love, you?” I finished the song and the
crowd erupted in a deafening roar. I got up, grabbed a microphone, and made my way to the front of
“Good luck, Brendon,” Ryan called and I nodded. I jumped down into the space between the
stage and the barrier and walked right up to Katie, who was still crying silently. I held her left
hand in mine as I raised the mike with my other hand, waiting until the crowd settled down somewhat
“Kaitlynn Elizabeth Johnston, I love you with all my heart. Will you marry me?” The
entire arena went silent and I don't think a single person was breathing, including me.
She gasped, apparently not expecting this and her cheeks went slightly pink from the embarrassment.
Her eyes searched mine for what seemed like an eternity and my hope began to slowly slip away at her
silence. Finally she answered.
“Of course, Brendon. Nothing would make me happier.” I heard Ryan and Spencer whooping
back onstage and Jon started chanting `kiss her, kiss her'. Soon, the audience was chanting it as
well. Smiling wider than I ever have before, I leant over the barrier and our lips met in sweet
surrender. I could feel her tears flowing from her eyes and it was all I could do not to start
crying with joy. After about a minute or so, we broke apart and I jumped back onstage, ready to
continue the concert with a new found energy.
