“Just shut up and close your eyes,” Pete's voice rang out.

It was a rather beautiful Saturday night in down-town Chicago. The warm summer weather placing a humid yet comfortable blanket in the air and the smell of freshly cut grass and sweet smelling flowers in the breeze. Most families had resorted to either their backyards or front porches for supper and to spend sometime with their loved ones.

Peter Kingston Lewis Wentz the Third however had other plans. He was about to give his best friend Patrick Stump a never-forgetting surprise.

Pete and Patrick had been friends for quite a while. They were in every class at school together. Even though Pete had a love for literature as Patrick had a love for underground music. Pete craved for fame where Patrick craved for the skills of simply playing the guitar. They were both each others worst enemy, yet something held them together. They were inseparable since the day they met.

Patrick was a shy boy with nothing much to say. He had an opinion of a politician but was always scared to voice it. Pete was a loud boisterous boy. He had every quality of a leader and definitely put those qualities to use. Pete however did have his small faults, always visiting the school counselor once a week.

What brought them together was the fear of rejection.

Tonight they were supposed to be spending their time at Pete's house. As usual he got bored and yearned for a little adventure. Not telling Patrick where they were going both 16 year old boys head of on foot. Since Pete was a high school soccer player he was more fit then Patrick causing Patrick to be a few steps behind Pete. They walked in silence letting the heat form an un-spoken comfort between them.

When they finally got to the source of Pete's adventure Patrick was scared. In front of him was a five storey building and the only way up was to climb. Patrick was never fond of heights. He shot Pete a terrified look. Pete returned it with a soft comforting smile then turned his back and started to proceed up the stairs on the side of the worn out, run down, apartment building. The stairs were simple metal ladders with not much life in them. Scared to be alone Patrick carefully started to climb up, ignoring the anxiety attack waiting to happen. Just as he was two steps away from reaching the top of the landscape Pete stopped him.

“Just shut up and close your eyes,” He says reaching for Patrick's hand.

Doing everything in his power not to scream Patrick tried to calm down at Pete's touch, feeling his heart beat a hundred miles per hour. Finally realizing he's on top of the building and Pete had stopped guiding him Patrick asked to open his eyes.

“Not yet, I haven't even started the surprise,” Pete laughs.

Patrick stands there starting to get worried. What is Pete doing? No sooner had he asked himself the question he could feel Pete's body heat near him. He was slowly getting closer to Patrick's face. With his eyes closed Patrick felt Pete's lips press against his own. Pete's lips were so soft making Patrick weak at the knees.

“You can open your eyes now,” Pete quietly whispered those words as if they were said too loudly the earth might shatter into a million pieces.

Patrick opened his eyes slowly only to be met with a breath-taking view of the whole of Chicago. All the lights were lit up, symbolizing candles. Patrick had never seen anything as amazing. Pete ushered Patrick to sit down next to him, as they gazed at the sites. Silence quickly fell.

“It's so beautiful,” Patrick finally speaks.

“Just like someone I know,” Pete smiled.

“Why me?” Patrick asked after a bit of silence.

“You are the only person who is keeping me away from the beautiful call of death,” Pete answered.

“But I am just a simple boy with nothing to offer you,” Patrick admits.

“Yet the simplest are the most interesting. You make my pain go away with a simple smile, you make my demons disappear with simple words, and you make my world worth living with your simple presents. You simply make me.” Pete says scooting closer to Patrick.

“Do you love me?” Patrick asks innocently letting a tear roll down his face.

“There is no one else who belongs in my heart but you,” Pete replies moving his face to Patrick's.

“Feel this?' Patrick asked moving Pete's hand to his heart. `You are the only person who can make my heart beat slower and faster at the same time.”

Pete grabs Patrick's head and both their lips collide. Tears run freely as they stay positioned in their momentary heaven.

Was this one step closer to them over-coming their fear of rejection?

“I love you Pete,”

“I love you Patrick,”

“Never let me go,” Patrick demands through sobs.

“I promise I never will.” Pete replies kissing Patrick's tears away.

I think it is…
