Requiem
By Dyana Lee Chaplik

Requiem
by Dyanalee
May 1998

Duo sits down heavily on the carefully tended grave, his violet eyes glittering. "Oh man, I'm sorry. I...I..ummm....just found out," his voice is soft, hoarse. "They only thougth to tell me at all when I asked where you've been..." Duo raises his eyes skyward as they fill with bitter anger. He can still hear the flat, emotionless voice in his mind. "Pilot Winner was terminated two months ago." He whispered the words again, trying to make it real. How was he supposed to believe this? That six feet below him in the dirt was Quatre?
"WHy didn't they tell us? At least I could've been here when..." Duo couldn't finish. The tears broke then. He stared at the buoquet of white lillies he was gripping in his hand. "I brought you these...I hope you like them. Not that it probably matters much now. Quatre...damn...I don't even know how you died. And now... I don't even know why. You know, I always thought it was so that the hurting would stop. But what are we fighting for? Really? When they can't even be bothered to tell me that my friend died? Why am I fighting for these people? Quatre, you have to tell me." He listened. With all his heart he listened. The only sound that came back was the soft whisper of the wind as it ran through the cemetary. It was still and peaceful here. The sunlight poured over everything and birds sang sweetly in the afternoon warmth. Just the sort of place Quatre belonged, he supposed. But wouldn't Quatre want to be in the desert? Or on his colony?
Duo wondered if anyone had even thought about it. He leaned over and placed his cheek on the cool stone that bor the image of the cheerful blond. He still couldn't really believe...he kept expecting Quatre to show up next to him and hug him or something. "I can't believe you're not coming back...I can't believe you went before I ever got a chance to tell you anything. To tell you that you mattered to me. You weren't just Sandrock's pilot, Quatre. Not to me. Don't ever let anyone make you into that. You were Quatre..Raber.." Duo couldn't finish, couldn't say the name. He couldn't even think anymore, just curl up against the marker and hold it as if he could hold his friend that way.
Why in hell was he fighting? What had Quatre died for, really? They killed even more innocents than Oz sometimes... Duo wondered if there really was a difference between them and Oz anymore. He wondered then if the others even knew... he supposed Trowa did, they were partners. But Heero and Wufei would just assume that they would be told. Like he had.
Duo rose then, turning slowly to regard Shinigami.

Duo, we are fighting to protect people! Better that we suffer than they do...
Pilot Winner was terminated two months ago...
Duo, I'll get you some tea, that will make you feel better!
A new pilot will be chosen for Gundam Sandrock Duo, are you okay?

"No, Quatre. I'm not okay. And all the tea in the world won't make it better this time. I know the truth now." Duo turned and stepped closer to Shinigami, slowly raising the self destruct device he was only to use in dire emergencies. And pressed it. "Goodbye, Shinigami. It was great. Really."
Duo walked away. Maybe Wufei had something of a point about all his Justice babble. Because Duo knew there was none here. But he could salvage some. Shinigami would never kill again. He was done. What was he fighting for?
He had no idea.
Why did he stop fighting? Becuase Pilot Quatre Raberba Winner was terminated two months ago. And no one cared enough to tell him. Because Quatre was a person, and Duo realized they didn't think so. But he did. "Because I love you, my friend."
