Cupid Wears a Kasa
By "Kiku"

This 'fic was written as a Valentine's Day present to Ritz/Chen.
And even by looking at the color scheme of this page, you can pretty much guess who she likes... ^_^

Cupid Wears A Kasa

It's a quiet day in Simcoe. Kids are playing in the streets, people are outside leaning on fences chatting and sipping lemonade, and, amazingly enough, the slurpee aisle at the local 7-11 has remained clean for almost ten minutes straight.

Suddenly, the roar of a luxury sports car is heard. People look up from their activities to watch a dark purple Porsche cruise down the street. The car sparkles in the sun and its purple perfection is marred only by a single bumper sticker placed on the rear bumper that reads: I love Hotohori-sama. Unfortunately, most people don't know that as the sticker is in Japanese...

And if we listen closely, we can hear their conversation...

"Oooo! It's just purring! Doumo Ki-chan! I don't know what we would've done if you hadn't had those parts with you."

"Nanda betsuni no da. Kasas-don't leave home without one!"

[American Express PR rep: Hey! You can't just rip off our slogan like that! I'll SUUUEEE!]

[Kichiri: Be quiet na no da! I'm trying to write no da!]

The car pulls to a halt and pulls into a driveway. The two inside disembark and, after checking both the car and their face in the mirror (well, one of them anyway), they approach the front door.

"Aah! Look what the wind did to my hair!" exclaimed the (slightly) taller one. "At least when it was long I could braid it."

His (yes, his) companion rolled her eyes in mock disgust. "It looks fine Ryuuen no da. It always looks fine no da."

"Just fine?" her friend teased. The (slightly) shorter of the two took a swing at her friend, who feigned injury. The two laughed and continued up the walkway.

"So who are we going to visit again?" the purple haired one asked.

"Just a friend of mine no da," the brown-haired one replied.

Her companion arched a single perfect eyebrow (but not as perfect as Kouji's!) accusingly, but she only smiled playfully and kept on walking.

At the door, the brown haired girl paused just before ringing the doorbell.

"Ano...," she began.

"Ryuuen-san, would you mind just waiting in the car no da?"

"Naze?" he asked looking at his friend suspiciously.

"Oh, no reason na no da." But her face suggested otherwise.

"You don't lie very well, do you."

She made a face at him and shooed him back to the car. He reluctantly went, wondering what she was up to.

The girl let out a breath and once she saw Ryuuen disappear into the vehicle, she rang the doorbell.

A flurry of excited footsteps could be heard advancing on the door. The girl stepped back cautiously which was a good thing because suddenly the door flew open and another girl leaped out looking around wildly.

"Dokodokodoko! Doko wa NURIKO?"

Back in the Porsche, Nuriko sneezed.

By now Nuriko's companion had been seized by Ritz. "Kichiri!" she whined to her friend, "DOKO WA NURIKO?"

"Mou! Put me down na no da!" Kichiri told her excited friend. "He's in the car no da! We're all going to a movie together no da!"

"Wai!" Ritz dropped Kichiri as she began to fantasize about being a dark theatre with Nuriko.

"Itai no da!" Kichiri complained as she picked herself up from the step and began to brush herself off. But Ritz decided she was taking too long and grabbed her friend and dashed towards the waiting automobile.

"OOO! A Porsche!" she squealed as she opened the car door. She tossed Kichiri into the back and leapt into the front seat. She smiled brightly at Nuriko who leaned away, vowing to get Kichiri for this one...

By now Kichiri had recovered and the introductions began.

"Ryuuen, meet my friend Ritz no da."

"Konnichiwa!" Ritz said, smiling shyly at her beloved Nuri-chan.

"And Ritz, I'm sure you know Nuriko no da." Kichiri smiled and gestured towards the driver, poking him slightly to snap him out of it.

"Konnichiwa," Nuriko replied, hoping that drool would wash off his car.

"Yosh! Now that everyone knows each other, let's eat no da! Any suggestions no da?" Kichiri inquired. When no one volunteered anything, she pointedly nudged Ritz, who just stared at her beloved Nuriko.

Daa! I'm hungry na no da! Kichiri thought to herself. This is the last time I set up one of my friends with a Seishi no da! And this time, Kichiri almost meant it. ^_-

"Yosh! Let's go to Red Lobster no da," she said after several more moments of silence.

Nuriko almost protested, as the last few times they had eaten had been at Red Lobster. But then he looked at Kichiri, who glared at him, and Ritz, who was still drooling on his car. He wisely stifled his protest and pulled out of the driveway heading for the nearest Red Lobster.

After they were seated and had their orders taken (and after the waitress had recovered), Kichiri rose and left the table saying that she was 'going to powder her nose'. Of course, her intent was pathetically obvious to Nuriko, who hadn't missed the Valentine's Day paraphernalia strewn all over the place everywhere they went. And as much as he liked Kichiri, this matchmaking thing had to stop.

Meanwhile, Kichiri had superdeformed and was watching her two friends from a nearby plant, strategically placed so that she could both see her friends and snitch food from the unsuspecting waiters that went by. Restaurants always take too long to bring your food, she thought.

She nabbed an appetizer sampler from a passing tray and then, munching contently, returned to watching her two friends. Nuriko, being as nice as he was, had tried to start a conversation, but Ritz wasn't doing very well. Kichiri sighed. While it wasn't every day that one of your friends introduces you to the man of your dreams, the poor girl really needed to snap out of it if she wanted to enjoy it. Plus, Ritz might become dehydrated from all that drooling...

Deciding to take action, Kichiri popped back to her normal size, scaring the daylights out of a few patrons and waitresses. She went back to the table and dragged Ritz to the ladies' room.

"Oi! Ritz-san! Snap out of it no da!" She shook her friend until her eyes stopped shimmering.

"Huh? What?"

Whew, thought Kichiri, relieved, she's back to normal no da. "Ritz-san, get a hold of yourself! Ryuuen's just a normal guy no da. Well, sort of normal, but he's really nice no da. And just think of how long you've been waiting for today no da. Just relax and enjoy yourself Ritz-san-otherwise you'll regret it na no da."

"Boy, can you ever tell who you hang around with. You sounded just like Chichiri in episode-"

"Wakatta yo no da. Now just get out there and enjoy yourself no da." Ritz quickly wiped the traces of drool from her face and followed her friend back to the table.

By now the food had arrived and their collective attention was focused on the meal-Kichiri's on eating, Nuriko's and Ritz's on watching Kichiri eat, her hands moving so fast that they were only a blur.

"Wow. She's so fast that sometimes I wonder if she's even human," Ritz remarked in awe.

"So ka. She's even scarier than Miaka," Nuriko agreed.

"Baka!" Kichiri protested in between mouthfuls, "at least I have table manners and use utensils." Neither one could argue with that so they all returned to their meals.

After waiting for Kichiri's fifth helping to arrive, the trio left for the movie theatre.

Once they were back in the car, however, another decision awaited them-which movie to see.

"I made the decision on where to eat so you two have to pick which movie we're going to see no da," Kichiri stated.

"Why are you asking me?" Nuriko retorted. "I'm not the one from this world."

Thus the decision fell on Ritz. Frantically she ran through all the movies that were playing, trying to decide which one. She wanted something romantic to create a nice romantic atmosphere or maybe a scary one so that she could arrange to leap into Nuri-chan's arms (sigh).

She noticed out of the corner of her eye that Kichiri was getting impatient, and Ritz remembered how much her friend loved movie theatre popcorn. Suddenly it came to her.

"How about 'Titanic'?" Ritz offered. And since it sounded fine to Nuriko and Kichiri, they drove to the theatre. Once they had arrived, they were faced with an insanely long line up.

"Darn! I forgot it was cheap night!" Ritz dismayed.

But Kichiri's kasa came to the rescue again and the three found themselves inside the theatre in moments.

"I'll line up for snacks," Kichiri told them, "you two find us some seats while there's still room left no da."

"Are you sure you can carry that much?" Kichiri just glared at him and he held up his hands in surrender. Tasuki was right; she was so much fun to tease. Ritz giggled at the spectacle and the other two joined in on her laughter.

Kichiri shooed them towards the theatre, pleased that Ritz was relaxing and beginning to have fun. Nuriko, she also noticed a bit smugly, wasn't exactly being tortured either.

And once she was secure in the knowledge that her two friends were safely in the theatre, she whipped out her kasa and vanished to back to Konan to torture a certain group of bandits some more.

I wonder what's taking Kichiri so long, Ritz thought to herself. The lineup can't be that long. Just then the lights dimmed and the previews began. Oh well, she'll find us.

Half an hour passed and there was still no sign of Kichiri. However, neither Nuriko nor Ritz could get out to look for her as they had followed Kichiri's advice and had sat right in the centre of the theatre, and were surrounded by people who didn't exactly look like they would be thrilled to let them get by.

"Psst!" Ritz whispered to Nuriko. "Where do you suppose Ki-chan went?"

"I don't have a clue," Nuriko whispered back, leaning over towards Ritz, "but we'll have to bug her about it once she gets back." He smiled and Ritz was suddenly aware of how close their faces were. She blushed and moved back, suddenly nervous. Nuriko saw her and then realized the same thing. He too sat back in his seat and turned his attention back to the movie screen, a little bit flustered, which was unusual for him. They sat through the movie without further incident, enjoying each other's company, a face occasionally popping out of kasa-space to check on them.

After the movie let out, Ritz and Nuriko scanned the crowd for their friend's face but she was nowhere to be seen.

"Let's check the parking lot," Ritz suggested. "Maybe she's waiting for us at the car."

They went to the car and waited for Kichiri to show up. After about 15 minutes, Nuriko gave up.

"Mah! Where is she?" he asked no one in particular. "I'm only waiting a few more minutes and then we're leaving without her. She can just get home with her kasa." Ritz nodded in agreement.

And so, after a few more minutes had passed, the two exasperated people gave up. As they got into the car and drove away, you could hear a little giggle from kasa-space...

[Shhh Kourin-chan! They'll hear you no da!]

[Gomen ne, Kichiri-san. It's just that they're so kawaii!]

Meanwhile, Nuriko was driving Ritz home and the two were ranting and raving about their mutual friend's irresponsibility.

"I can't believe she'd do that!"

"No kidding! And to make us worry like that!"

"Exactly. How are we supposed to enjoy ourselves when we're worrying about her?"

"It just spoils the whole day," Ritz agreed.

As he was driving along, Nuriko suddenly spotted an ice cream shop as he rounded the corner near Ritz's house. "Mmm. I think we deserve a treat, ne Ritz-chan?" He nodded his head in the direction of the ice cream shop.

"Yeah! And won't Kichiri be mad when she finds out that we had ice cream without her!" Ritz added gleefully.

They pulled into the lot and got their ice cream, which they happily used Kichiri's money to pay for. It was such a very nice night outside so they sat down on the tables outdoors to eat their ice cream. The two talked long into the night while, overhead, two sets of eyes watched them with great interest between licks of ice cream.

[Arigatou for the ice cream Kichiri-san!]

[Don't mention it Kourin-chan no da!]

Finally, they left to drive Ritz home, since she had to get up early the next day. Ritz had grown quiet as they neared the house. Her wonderful day that she had spent with Nuriko was coming to a close. They pulled into her driveway and Nuriko hopped around to open her door for her. Ritz felt elated as Nuriko walked her to her door.

"I-I had a really fun time today, Nuriko-san. Thanks a lot for going with us," Ritz stammered. She looked at him and was sure that she had never in her entire life seen anything so wonderful.

"Atashi mo," Nuriko replied, noticing how the moonlight sparkled in Ritz's dark hair.

The standard awkward moment ensued as neither quite knew what to say.

[Baka! Kiss her good night no da!]

[Shh Kichiri-san! They'll hear you!]

Ritz looked around perplexed. "Ano, Nuriko-san, did you just hear something?"

Ritz shrugged. Maybe she was just overwhelmed by all that was happening tonight and it was starting to get to her. She turned to open the door, hoping that she wouldn't get into too much trouble for being out so late.

"Ano-" Nuriko began.

Ritz froze. Then she forced herself to turn around again and face Nuriko.

"Nanda?" she managed.

"Ano, maybe we could do this again sometime?" he ventured.

Ritz could hardly believe her ears. She nodded vehemently as she couldn't quite speak at that particular moment.

"Great. Well, have a good night."

"Y-you too," Ritz said as she found her voice again.

"Oh, and Ritz-chan?"

"Happy Valentine's Day." And Nuriko kissed her gently on the cheek before descending the steps and waving good-bye to her.

Ritz just stood there watching him drive away and most likely would have stayed that way until morning if a certain Amazon priestess and not appeared.

"Soooo, how did you two manage without me no da?"

That broke Ritz out of Nuriko's spell. "KICHIRI!" she screamed launching herself at the girl.

Kichiri looked a teensy bit frightened as Ritz leapt at her and enveloped her in a crushing hug. I should have brought the crowbar again, Kichiri thought as she struggled to free herself, And Tasuki too no da...

"ARIGATOU! ARIGATOU! ARIGATOU! ARIGATOU! ARIGATOU! ARIGATOU! ARIGATOU! ARIGATOU!" Ritz screamed again and again, crushing the air out of her friend's lungs.

Lights went on in Ritz's house as her parents came to the door, having heard yelling outside. Her mother dragged her father out of bed and they both went to the front door and peered around outside.

"Now I was positive I heard something..." Both parents looked at each other and shrugged. They closed the door and headed back to bed.

On the rooftop the silhouette of two girls could be seen, one with her hand clamped over the other's mouth.

"Shhh baka! Do you want to get in trouble no da?"

She whipped out her trusty kasa and dropped the girl into her bedroom. Ritz landed soundly on her bed and Kichiri's face appeared for a moment to tell her to get some sleep.

But Ritz couldn't; she couldn't get Nuriko out of her mind, even more so than usual. And when she finally fell asleep, Ritz dreamt wonderful dreams of purple Porsches and purpler hair.

Happy Valentine's Day Ritz-chan no da

Owari no da ^_-
