I'm dead. That's what I can make of it. My spirit floats above
Tamahome, Miaka, and my own body. That's how I figured I was dead.
Someone comes next to me. It's Kourin-my sister! She speaks to me in her
"Ryuuen, my brother, I am here to see you to Kami-sama's world.
But, he has granted you a special wish first. He is going to let you see
all of your friends. One last time." She put her arm around my shoulder
as a single spirit tear traced a path down my face. I looked down once
more, at my dead body. The others were there. Tama and Miaka were still
crying. Oh god, Tasuki! He's crying! I never thought I'd see him cry.
Mitsukake takes the wounds off my body-even though it's already too late.
Chichiri has his mask off. I wonder if Mitsukake could heal that?
But I am never to know the answer. Chiriko. I hardly knew him. Now I
never will. Another tear tracked down my face, followed by several others.
I would have to go soon, my sister was pulling at me. I waved goodbye to
my friends, even though they couldn't see me. I had but one more want. I
had not seen Hotohori. My love. Although I'm not quite so sure anymore-
my mind is slowly losing it's memories.
"Ryuuen-brother dear- we are going to one more place. Come follow
me." I did. She led me to the palace. So I _would_ see Hotohori! Does
he even know I'm gone? My thoughts are disrupted as I passed into his
room. There he was! But wait! What is he doing! My Hotohori, what is it
that you would threaten yourself with your _own_ sword? Then I hear him
"Nuriko, why? Why did you have to leave me? Nuriko-"
His words are cut off with a sob. Oh Hotohori-sama! Had I but
known! My memory is rushing back. I have only love for this man. I must
stop him from killing himself! Though I wish he was here with me, I wish
more for him to live!
I try frantically to get the sword from out of his grasp, but it is
to no avail, for I am only a spirit and can touch nothing. My attention is
diverted when a woman walks past the room. Suddenly, I know what I must
do. My spirit rushes forward-straight into the woman's body. I shove her
soul out. She is now floating around, and my sister takes her away.
Strange, I thought she would not approve of this. But perhaps she knew it
would happen all along.
I have no more time to ponder as Hotohori has started the fatal
plunge of his sword.
"Hotohori-sama! NO!" I yell as I run in the room, diving for his
sword. Hotohori stops in mid plunge. I am releived. He looks up at me.
Ye gods his eyes are _empty_! There is no soul in those eyes. But then,
something sparks in them.
"N-N-Nuriko? Is it really you?" I look down at myself.I see a
braid of purple hair. How had that happened? The girl whose body I took
over had had short brown hair. This body must have changed when I
possessed it. What had her name been? Houki.
How did I know that. Her memories. They are still here with me.
I am two people! Hotohori is still looking at me.
"No, Hotohori-sama, I am Houki."
"That is impossible. Houki has short brown hair and green eyes.
You are Nuriko. Why do you not want me to know?"
My eyes glisten with tears as I hear the saddness in his voice.
Then, time freezes. Everything just stopped. I am suddenly faced with my
sister once more. She spaeks to me.
"Ryuuen, I knew this would happen, and I am to offer you this
choice." Ahh, so she _had_ known. "Ryuuen, you may become Houki. You can
tell Hotohori it is you, but you must never let anyone else know. If you
do, you will be banished from ever seeing any of your friends again from
the spirit world- where you will be taken. Your other choice, is to go
back in time a few minutes ago, and make what has happened, unhappen. Then
Hotohori will be with you in the spirit world. You must make the choice
Hm, to live in secret, or to let Hotohori die. There was no choice.
"I will become Houki." Kourin smiled, and time flowed again.
Hotohori was still staring at me.
"You are right, I am Nuriko. I saw you when I was a spirit, and I
couldn't let you die, so I took over Houki. Her soul is now resting. I am
here for you." My heart flew when he smiled at me. It is the most
beautiful thing I have ever seen. I have only seen it a few rare times.
Suddenly, he runs to me, and throws his arms around my neck.
"Oh Nuriko! I thought I had lost you! I couldn't go on!
Aishiteru Nuriko." Then he quietly crys on my shoulder. I cry as well.
When we are both done, I tell him my condition for staying here.
"Hotohori, you can tell no one who I really am. If you do, I will
be take away. I love you Hotohori! I don't want to leave! Please!"
Hotohori squeezes my arm and turns my face to look at his. Had I been
"Nuriko, I will tell no one only if you will do one thing for me.
Marry me, and be my empress. Will you marry me, my Nuriko?" I cannot
speak. I nod more that once and smile. Tears are running down my face
again. I hardly notice. We embrace once more. Then Hotohori parts.
"I will make the preperations for the wedding. It will be
tomorrow. I love you, my secret
Nuriko." Then, he goes off. I am happy. I'm with my love.
Tamahome and the others are back now. It has been a long time
since I've seen them. Chiriko is dead, I've heard. I guess I was never
meant to know him in this lifetime. I turn down the hall leading to my
"Oh my God, IT'S NURIKO!!!!!!!!!" There is shouting all around me.
It's Tamahome and Tasuki. They are shouting something about a
reincarnation of Nuriko. I sigh in my mind and feign confusion. They have
no idea how close they are. The two drag me to Hotohori.
"Hotohori, look, it's Nuriko! What is she doing here?!" Hotohori
looks up at them shocked. He recovers himself and explains.
"That is not Nuriko. That is my wife, Houki. Houki, please sit by
me. We are discussing what has gone on while they have been gone." I
smile and nod, sqeezing his shoulder as I sit down. I feel horrible as I
listen. They all miss Nuriko so much. I wish I could tell them. Just to
see them happy again. But I can't, and neither can Hotohori. I see the
pain of that in his eyes. But he will never deluge my secret. Of this I
know. We will go on, and find another way to make our friends happy. With
our love, anything is possible.
