Not A Dream
By Electric Baby

Not a Dream

James kissed me, “Lily, will you-“

I woke with a start. It was only a dream. Wait a minute, what woke me up? And why is my bed shaking? I opened my eyes slightly only to find James and Sirius…jumping on my bed? Wait a minute…

“How the hell did you get up the stairs?” I asked. I should have known that they would have found a way to get up the stairs to the girls'-dormitories, which turns into a slide whenever a boy tries to walk up them-but then again, they are the Marauders.

James and Sirius only pointed to their broomsticks that lay by the door.

“It's 11:00! We snuck out to Honeydukes,” He said. I really hated it when he breaks the rules, but he would never be able to break the habit.

“And we got lots of stuff for the party in the common room!” Sirius said enthusiastically.

Oh yea. Now I remember. It's New Years Eve.

“And you promised not to fall asleep!” James pouted.

"Well its hard not to be sleepy after four hours of shopping and mischeif at Hogsmeade! i'm not sure why u had to go out to buy more!" I said to him.

“You can never have too many new years eve pranks," Sirius exclaimed.

"Of course not!" Said James. I looked at James with my you're-lucky-I-love-you look. He just grinned back.

James' POV

“Do I have to get up?” Lily asked hopefully. She had fallen asleep reading a book and was wearing a pair of sleep pants that hung loosely at her hips and an old worn out sweatshirt…She looked beautiful.

“Yes,” I said stubbornly. She was not going to get out of this one. Sirius had made him go to Honeydukes and throw a party. It was only fair that Lily suffered the same fate.

I told her that after Sirius went down to the common room to start the party. She just glared playfully at me.

“I don't want to go,” She said persistently. I looked at her and smiled my mischievous smile. She instantly looked worried.

“What?” I asked.

“You have that I've-got-an-idea-which-is-probably-an-evil-one-that-will-get-me-into-trouble look on your face,”

“Maybe I do have an evil plan,” To tell the truth, for once I didn't have an evil idea. It's a pure genius idea! Not evil...

After another five minutes of convincing her, I finally got Lily to come downstairs. She said a spell, and she was suddenly in a pair of jeans and a green sweater. And then I noticed what was on a chain around her neck. It was the promise ring that I gave her last year on Christmas Eve. I smiled again.

Lily's POV

We walked out the door, hand in hand.

“Why do I feel like I'm forgetting something?” James said right before he put his foot on the staircase. I quickly looked at the doorway and saw his broom laying in the entrance. We slid rather ungracefully into the common room.

The party was going pretty well. Mostly we just sat around and talked. I was sitting beside James with my head on his shoulder, his arms around me, playing idly with the the ring on my necklace.

Three minutes to go until the new year.

Sirius was drunk, As was Peter, Remus was snogging his girlfriend, and everybody else were either talking, or even more drunk than Sirius.

“You know I've been thinking…” James said into my ear. His breath tickling my cheek.

“What?” I shifted so I could look at him. He looked slightly nervous, which is rare.

Two minutes to midnight.

“I've been thinking. And the only conclusion I can think of is that I love you, Lily,” He said.

At this, I got even more confused.

One minute until midnight.

“And, well. I want to make it permanent,”

“What do you mean?”

Twenty seconds….

“What I mean is,” He pulled something out of his pocket.

He got up from the couch, and knelt in front of me, taking my hand. I couldn't believe what was happening. “Ever since I gave you that promise ring,” he gently touched the ring that was hanging from my neck, “I've thought about this over and over again. I love you Lily Evans…” He opened whatever he pulled out of his pocket earlier and presented me with yet another ring box. He looked me directly in the eye and said quietly four words, “Will you marry me?”

Ten seconds…..

Wait…Is this actually happening, or am I dreaming again? I was stunned to put it lightly. No this is the real deal. I could feel tears in my eyes- tears of happiness.

“Yes.” I whispered. James looked at me and smiled as he pulled me to my feet and kissed as if to seal the deal. He put the ring-a simple gold band with a diamond in the middle, with a smaller diamond on either side-on my finger, then he kissed me again. I heard a collective sigh from some of the girls around us, as I pulled away from James and smiled.

More than half of the common room had witnessed James' proposal. Some girls looked so happy and had dreamy looks on their faces-probaby thinking about the day this happened to them-, other girls looked furious. Most likely James' ex-girlfriends.

I looked up into his hazel eyes and smirked, “Wait until the rest of your fanclub hears about this.” I said teasingly.

James looked absolutly frightened.

One…

Can you think of a better way to enter a new year?

“HAPPY NEW YEAR!” Sirius cried, while standing on a chair than toppling over.

“Happy new year, James Potter” I whispered.
