I Promise
By Electric Baby

There I was. Just reading a book on Christmas Eve. Sounds fun, right? The truth is, I'm bored out of my mind. None of my friends are staying for the holidays, and James is probably off somewhere trying to wreck havoc on Snape, it's snowing but I'm too comfortable to go outside. Plus, snow isn't fun when you're by yourself.

I heard a door close behind me, and moments after that, a weight right next to me. I knew in an instant it was James. The leader of the mischievous group, The Maurauders, a prankster, a prat, and the boy that I have grown to love.

“Hey,” He quietly said to me, wrapping an arm around my waist.

“Hey,” I responded just as quietly.

“Want to go for a walk, seeing as you're attempts to read are failing drastically?” He looked at me and then to the book in my lap, which I just noticed was upside down.

Stay nice and warm, or go outside with James...Like I need to think about this?

“Sure.”

It's true, I really wasn't reading. Just thinking. James makes fun of me because I could space out at the most unusual moments. I think he does it because I actually put my mind to better use than him. I told him this one, and all he did was look serious and say, “What do you mean `better use'? Pulling pranks isn't easy! It takes lots of thinking!” but I could tell he was only playing, there was that look of mischief in his eyes.

We got up and walked to our respected dormitories. Five minutes later, we were walking out of the common room, gloved hand in gloved hand.

James and I walked aimlessly around the frozen lake.

“It's beautiful, isn't it?” I asked, speaking of the snow and the frozen lake. It truly did look like a christmas card.

“Very,” He said. I looked at him and our eyes connected. I looked back at the lake, I could feel heat rising in my cheeks.

“Miss Evans, are you blushing?” He said in a professional tone.

“Yes Mr. Potter, I believe I am,” I replied in the same tone.

“It's true you know,” He said as he went behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. “You are beautiful, Lily,”

It was then when I remembered something.

I turned around, and crossed my arms, “You said I could open your present early!” I said childishly pouted.

James suddenly looked oddly thoughtful, “I'm not sure if I should give you a present at all, Miss Evans. Have you been nice all year?” He said yet again in his serious-yet-playful tone of voice.

“Oh, just give it to me you prat!” I smiled and playfully smacked him on the arm.

“Alright, alright,” He held up his hands in defeat. Out of his coat pocket, he pulled a small box. He kissed me on the cheek and handed her the box, “Merry Christmas, Lily.

I looked at the box. It was about the size of my palm and was covered in dark blue wrapping paper, finished off with a red bow. I've been pestering James for weeks about what he got my, but he stayed silent and wouldn't even give me a clue.

I opened the box, to find an even smaller box. It was a ring box. I looked at James questioningly, and all he did was smile silently.

I opened this box and gasped. Inside was a silver ring with an emerald heart.

“James….” I was at loss of words. This had to be the best gift that anyone had ever given me.

“Look at it closer,” he said. Again with that secret smile! I did as he said and in the faint light of the setting sun, I made out the letters, LJ

I looked at him again and flung my arms around his neck, “Thank you,” I whispered and pulled away from the embrace.

“It's a promise ring,” He said as he put the ring on my finger.

“I love you, Lily Evans, and I always will,” He said and then kissed me.

“You promise?” I said as we pulled away.

“I promise,” He said. And with that, we walked back into the warmth of the castle, gloved hand in gloved hand.
